Finally. This is only what, 6 years overdue? I guess with the RX1 series appearing dead (no new body released in years) they finally decided it was time to give the people what they want.
If it performs on par with the 85/1.8 (adjusted for FL differences obviously) I'll be a happy camper.

I would be very happy if it matches all qualities of the 85mm, except I do hope that they improve the smoothness and roundness of bokeh. That was my one issue with that lens, and to this day I still have not bought one because of it.

Given it isn't a G lens I wouldn't hold my breath.
There is the 34/1.4 Zeiss for bokeh smoothness, with free decentering thrown in
Not getting too excited here. I know most of us want a smaller, lighter 1.8 lens plus less money. Problem is the quality of lens could be just another everyday lens with not a lot of IQ in it.
I’m glad it’s coming it’s about time but we really need to see something better than like the 50 1.8 and more on par with the 55 or 85. Right now I have the Rokinon 45 and I like it. So we will see.
Making a good 85 is easier than making a 35/1.8. So it won’t be as good as a short tele. I will be happy if its like 28/2 with landscape sharpness at F8. 28 bokeh is great, and this lens should follow.
I am happy that its a FE so it will be small. A bloated GM is no good. I need some character and not OTT sharpness.
Of course they are. I have had the Batis 40/2 CF now for a while, which I am very happy with, but I also picked a mint used, centered, copy of the FE Distagon T* 35mm f/1.4 ZA for $1000. Once I did Sigma decided to put the ART on sale, release the rumor of the 35/1.2 and Sony the 35/1.8. So your all welcome.
Actually, unless it was G or GM quality I am not sure I would be interested these days. Between the Batis and the GM primes that are available if I want AF I am sticking to those for primes (except the 90mm macro). For zooms its the G and GM lenses.

Yes, keep it small and light and just meet the 28 image quality and I'm in. There are other big heavy 35's that are aimed for better image quality if one wants that.
I'd hoped something more similar to the 24 GM, eventually f/1.8 to keep it compact. If performance is FE28ish then I think I would look seriously at the Batis 40/2.
I am glad it is not a GM or a Batis with bloated everything.

You would go for a flimsy Rokinon with issues than a Sony lens?
Mileage does vary with the user.

After switching over from Canon I had waited ages for this lens and gave up and got the Sigma 35mm art. I got the native version for only $799 AUD so I'm still pretty happy with it.
Sure it is big and heavy but so are all 35mm f/1.4's and for that price, the performance is amazing. I may get this lens later on down the track if I get sick of the size and weight but I always wanted a 35mm f/1.4 and it hasn't disappointed me so far.
I hope Sony gets wise and have designeed a 35/1.8 with a 55mm or 67mm filter thread to benefit the optical performance of the lens and price it like the 85/1.8 or 50/2.8 macro. I also hope it doesn't have a macro function and that it is internal focus. The Canon 35/1.8 RF has macro but extends while focusing, which is no good, imo.

First off I’m not having any issues, so it’s actually functioning quite well and it’s been full tested against a CV 50 1.2 and tested quite well against it. I’m just not putting any stock into this Sony 1.8 yet. Need to realize I’ve been through 5 count them 5 Sony 35 1.4 lenses. I’m cursed on 35mm lenses from Sony. Will see but until I test it I’m just not having a great feeling on this one. Honestly I’m rarely wrong but I would love it if I am. We will see .

Oh, no, just got a Sigma 35 1.4 FE.
Don't worry....the Sigma is more than likely a better lens optically than this. It's larger, of course, but I don't expect Sony to pull out all the stops on this lens. It'll be good, but with some compromises, and probably not too much less than you paid for the Sigma 35mm. I too got the Sigma 35/1.4 FE with this recent sale (I mean, for $600 it's an absolute steal), and I've been extremely impressed with it so far. Very sharp wide open, good bokeh, AF has been excellent for me (though I don't shoot video, which is where I understand it isn't great).
