Nope, sorry. We didn't need another mediocre 35mm option. A 1.8 GM is what I was hoping for. An FE model just doesn't give me confidence but testing may prove me wrong. We already have the Zeiss 2.8 which is decent and compact. Unless the images are stellar like my old Leica 35 f2 Summicron, I still won't be happy
Looking for another brick? No thanks...enough of them already out there. Time for more compact medium fast primes.
Nice move Sony but I would never switch from my beloved 35mm Sony ZEISS 1.4 with lot's of pop, contrast without end, nice colors and a 1.4 aperture with more background separation to this new relative "flat" rendering Sony glass.

Also, since it's fully native, they can lean more heavily on software corrections. I'm positive those were factored into the design and production considerations, as those can keep the cost (and size) down.

Possibly that Sony optical engineering team has gotten much better since then, though the Nikon has 3 ASPH and 2 ED while the Canon has one ASPH. The Nikon is only a bit better than the Canon in aberration control with flatter FC. Given the Canon can do half size with IS incorporated, I say the Canon was better designed than the Nikon.

I agree that the optical design is key here so let's hope this will be a high IQ lens even with the lack of special glass.
It looks quite nice actually. More than acceptable wide open to my eyes. The problem is, let’s see later on how many can get a good copy like those sony give to the press, or maybe the rest of the mortals have to live with de entered ones... 35mm is a delicate focal length for that, but maybe being 1.8 instead of 1.4 it’s easier to get things right?
Right now I’m very happy with my Sigma, but who knows in a future after the lens it’s at its right price...

Wow, we finally did get it! Nice low weight, hope the image quality is good with decent rendering. Could be an excellent choice for walk around and relaxed shooting.

"I say the Canon was better designed than the Nikon"
In what respect? I think it is not really comparable. The Canon is a macro lens and extends. Then there are aspects as sharpness, focus speed etc.

Well, apparently the color profile produced by this lens is closer to Canon's too . So maybe the QC is also there. Jokes aside, except for the FE 35/1.4, Sony hasn't had any high incident of decentered lenses lately.

Hahahaa
Actually in some sample shots at night from the first web I liked the colors I was seeing, and I thought they must have been taken with the a9 (i was wrong). Maybe Sony is changing the lens coatings?
Yes indeed, lately it seems Sony is doing things right with the built quality. So far I had very good luck with my copy of the 28 i had (sold it already but it was pretty great). But then my first copy of the 50 1.8 was quite decentered, my second copy is fine. And my 85 1.8 was super sharp, but decentered as well, although not to the point of sending it back (although even at f2.8 2 corners were visibly less sharp than the other 2, but the test was at 42 mpx and the rest of the frame was quite good). I haven’t bought any more, they’re just out of my budget.

In that it's noticeably smaller and lighter with semi-macro and IS (a more compromised design), while showing a slightly inferior IQ (slightly more FC and CA, but with sharper corners). I was talking about the optical design, but even when you look at the focus speed, the Canon isn't behind Nikon. The only thing the Nikon clearly has over the Canon is weather sealing.

Looked like a neat lens until I saw the focus zooming out.... that's nifty fifty territory....

The transition zone looks more like the FE 28 than the FE 55.
Wide open at mid-distance, rendering can be a bit harsh. Here is a crop showing this area at f/1.8:
(Definitely not a RX1 Sonnar 35/2 killer)
Yeah pretty nervous and probably not at the level of the rx1 rendering. High sharpness is becoming the least of the features I value in a lens so hope this lens’ design is not just a sharp piece of glass and nothing more to keep it cheap. Not holding my breath though .

That doesn't say a lot. We don't know the constraints in designing the lenses to judge the expertise and skill of the designers.
