I found the published mtf curves and am proudly going to complain that they don’t inspire a ton of confidence. That said it fits the bill since it’s the only native 35 1.8.

Hopefully we've heard the end of the continuous 35 1.8 whining.

Don't worry, the Internet crowd will find something else to moan about. (I mean, apart from the price of this lens... it frankly looks a little steep but maybe it'll settle down from the MSRP in a few months).

Nope, sorry. We didn't need another mediocre 35mm option. A 1.8 GM is what I was hoping for. An FE model just doesn't give me confidence but testing may prove me wrong. We already have the Zeiss 2.8 which is decent and compact. Unless the images are stellar like my old Leica 35 f2 Summicron, I still won't be happy
An' I guess the OP can now remove the question mark from the thread title.
But anyhoo, this an effin' unicorn! Those in the Canon community (or formerly of it) may remember how for many years the updated 100-400/4.5-5.6 was a running myth. I guess the Sony 35/1.8 FE is a similar story.
Sony today announced the latest addition to its E-mount full-frame lens line-up with the introduction of a FE 35mm F1.8 large-aperture wide-angle prime lens, model SEL35F18F. ($748)
The compact dimensions and light weight of this full-frame, large-aperture prime lens provide mobility and convenience for shooting a wide range of subjects from everyday snapshots, food photography, landscapes, night scenes and more. The new lens provides outstanding corner-to-corner image quality from a maximum F1.8 aperture and its quiet autofocus and tenacious tracking performance make it a great choice for both stills and movie shooting.

Well I'm waiting for Fred to compare this against the Sonnar 35/2 on the RX1. The slightly bigger girth might just indicate that they're going for sharpness and bokeh again with minimal cat's eye. Now Sony, please release more GM in the <=200mm range!

I'm surprised it only has one aspherical element and the MTF is not much different than the FE 28/2's. The latter is equipped with 3 asphericals (one advanced aspherical) and 2 ED elements.

Truth is, nobody has ever been able to make a complain-proof 35.
, has anyone ever made a complaint-proof lens? Every new release, I'm always surprised by the negativity, but I guess us happy folks don't like to express ourselves as much.

Will the APSc magnification be half life size?
Magnification doesn't work like that; magnification is the actual physical size ratio between the object and the recording medium. It is still quarter size whether you shoot it on APS-C, m43 or even those cropped MF.

I hope this lens has some character and great bokeh. I would have been fine with a 35/2 which is small/compact while delivering great results. Time will tell.

Possibly that Sony optical engineering team has gotten much better since then, though the Nikon has 3 ASPH and 2 ED while the Canon has one ASPH. The Nikon is only a bit better than the Canon in aberration control with flatter FC. Given the Canon can do half size with IS incorporated, I say the Canon was better designed than the Nikon.
