After browsing the available samples, my impression is that optically this lens is in the same league as the Pentax FA 35/2.

We need better samples!!!

I'm expecting the price to drop a bit after a year. I think that's the usual cycle? I'm generally not an early adopter. As long as it's good, I don't mind paying $700 for a 35/1.8.

Looked like a neat lens until I saw the focus zooming out.... that's nifty fifty territory....

Internal focus macro will reduce the focal length as you change the focus closer to the macro distance, so that will shorten the MFD even further. That would make the 35's semi macro ability quite useless I imagine.

Conspiracy theory:

Sony priced this lens solely so that it would be priced less than Nikon and Canon's combined price with their 35/1.8's (regular price...both bodies are discounted at the moment.)

Canon EOS R + 35/1.8 = $2300+500 = $2800.
Nikon Z6 + 35/1.8 = $2000+850 = $2850.
Sony A7 III + 35/1.8 = $2000+750 = $2750.

Is that good or bad? I don’t know the Pentax lens.

The Eos RP is cheaper.

Didn't both Nikon and Canon have body price drops?

Cant imagine folks paying full retail for Nikon and canon bodies...... Sony price is what they think they can get away with. We're sort of trapped aren't we. What option do I have.......

The price is a little too high to instantly seal the deal over the Batis 40, but it remains in contention. Glad Sony finally put this lens out but I'll wait for more info before I decide which 35/40 AF to fill my kit with.

That doesn't say a lot. We don't know the constraints in designing the lenses to judge the expertise and skill of the designers.

Well, can you really draw any conclusion regarding the expertise and skill of the designers for the modern day designs? I can say I'm a little biased to draw that conclusion in that the Z-mount is the biggest and shallowest of all the mirrorless and Nikon wasn't really shy about bringing that up. So in theory, it has all the advantages one can ask for. I personally expected more from the S 35/1.8. It has its focus shift problem and the sharpness at WO is not really world beater by any mean while being the biggest and heaviest 35/1.8 among the mirrorless.

That’s why Nikon is better. I can buy this lens or use Nikon’s 35/1.8!

Do wish this had come a couple years ago...

Suboptimal AF on the Nikon, especially for the adapted Sony, no thanks :P. I do give it to Nikon that they did break the mold of treating the "slow" 1.8 lenses as consumer-grade products with their Z system. Apparently, they have only produced S-class (Superior) lenses so far regardless of the apertures.

It's "usable".

The most striking similarities are the bokeh and the chromatic aberrations.

The EOS RP and the A7 III are not competitors either....the A7 III is better in effectively every single way. And Sony has the A7II available cheaper than the RP.

I still love Sony. Actually I really want to see how this compares. The Z 35/1.8 isn’t perfect but it’s a quite good lens, or I have a Unicorn.paired with the 85 it might not be amazing rendering but should be quite competent.

Still I think Canon will sell Eos R(I)P + RF 24-240mm as a kit. They are after all behind in mirrorless bodies and sensor tech, which is of their own doing or lack thereof.

No man, no

Dont trust Nikon innovation, they've dropped the ball so often in the past, they scare me.

Fingers cross on coma correction. The FE 28, GM 24 and 55 ZA are all very useable for astro wide open. Would love to see the trend continue.

At this size and speed, this 35mm could make a great option for astro, single exposure or panos. And the MF is linear.

Canon is selling it as a kit RP+24/240 for $2200 (no discount)

Looks nice.

For myself... looking forward to some used RX1rII hitting the BS board now. But I'll wait a week or two to see what the mystery RX camera announcement is
