I think we’ll get one eventually but I agree the 28 (compact?) will keep up from seeing a 28/1.8S for a couple years. I’m kinda surprised the pancakes are taking so long to be released... I guess they’re working on the high end for a bit.

I wonder if there is even a 28/1.8S in the pipeline. I'm thinking we're getting the 'pancake' 28 instead of the 1.8 S
And I put 'pancake' in quotes because based on the silhouette posted in that lens lineup picture, it's no pancake but rather something similar in size to the 28/2.8D. I'm good with that as long as it is a solid performer. Same goes for the 40.
For some reason I've been a particularly brutal self-editor this last couple of weeks, so despite shooting a fair bit, I haven't produced anything I've felt worth posting. This one from this evening somehow managed to give the censors the slip, however…

I think we'll see a new faster 28 show up in the lens map sometime once Nikon has released all or nearly all of that they've already revealed (thinking NLT end of Q2 2025). Either of the fast F mount 28's seem like they would still be compelling if you wanted speed for now. I'm very hopeful that we get something 28/2.8D sized with an f/2.8 max aperture that is magical like the 28 2.8 AI-S but with better performance across the frame at wide apertures like the MF 28/2's. I think this should be technically doable. Although I'd really like a Z body this spring for some upcoming outdoor trips, I'm currently planning to continue holding out until that 28 is released so that I can jump into the system with a native 28, 24-70/4 and possibly 50/1.8 as a solid relatively light prime or travel kit.
