Early review shows disappointing AF speed (even slower than the GM 85...). Overall, it's softer than the GM 85 (more so around the edges)
My Amazon shipment was picked up yesterday evening and is on its way. Says Thursday for some reason, I’m hoping it’ll be a bit quicker than that, but US shipments are on their way.
I’m still okay here. Let’s not forget it’s 40% of the cost. If I need a pro tool I’ll get the GM, but I don’t. I don’t see a sharpness or bokeh issue that’ll really be noticeable in final shots. I also think I see less LoCA in the Samyang, which MIGHT be more noticeable. Don’t need video AF so if it shoots fine...

There isn't much I picked up from the review/comparison. Walking/ running sequences are better.

I have the FE 85/1.8 right now and would only consider this lens if the AF speed is fast. IQ wise, I don't really care as much. It should be decent enough at WO for portraits.
That’s fair, we all have priorities. I dont shoot fast action and it’ll match my Samyang 35/1.4 so I’d rather have this one than the Sony 1.8. Tried that one a while back but found it a bit boring/clinical. Much prefer the way the Samyang 35 renders, Hope this 85 is close to that.

Few thoughts about the video review...
When looking at the full size 'jpeg' files at 1:1 (pixel level), it looks like the Samyang 85/1.4 AF wide open is sharper at center and the Sony 85/1.4 GM is slightly sharper towards the corners at that distance. (I'm considering the reviewer focused at the exact same spot for both lenses and both files were sharpened equally)
On the rendering test, the cherry blossom tree was not focused at the same distance for both lenses, so we can't get anything conclusive here.
It's disappointing AF is not super fast for the new Samyang since the motor only has to move a small element to focus at all distances.

Samyang looks like it has stronger contrast as well wide open in those cactus crops. Not surprising, I’ve felt their recent lenses almost have “too much” global contrast.
I’m waiting for someone here to test AF, I never like those videos for that. Look forward to you or Guy looking at it, Fred.

Time is running out for me to get it before my trip to Puerto Rico.. Still hoping I get it 😁 GMPhotography wrote:
Fred and I will get on it. I’ll send my copy to Fred after I get a few days with it. Between us we are a pretty damn good combo.
I actually try not to look at these reviews. I just don’t trust them

Fortunately USPS had bad info, lens arrived today. First thoughts based on 15 shots at my desk... AF is quick enough. Faster than the 50/1.8 for example, probably not as quick and sure as the 85/1.8 but “not bad”. Again, I’ll let others judge AF. It’s a chubby thing but looks bigger than it feels. Slightly better balanced than the Samyang 35/1.4 for example.
I’ll test for centering etc later on but looks okay. I see some LoCA in the transition zones, and at 1.4 the bokeh in the transition zones is pretty nervous. OoF areas are pretty smooth though. There will be some cats eyes, doesn’t bother me but they’re there. Sharpness looks okay, I’m inside at ISO1000 so won’t judge it too harshly yet.
Nothing worth posting yet so just a shot of the lens itself...

Flat light, and in a rush but some samples below. Haven’t even had a chance to look at these on the computer myself, full-size straight out of camera JPEG‘s. Strikes me that both the IQ and auto focus struggle the most near MFD. Mid distance looks pretty decent on the LCD anyway. Happy to hear thoughts from anyone who can pull these up.

Would love to look at these but it looks like it's not a public folder (one needs to request access from you, and I'm guessing you don't want a bunch of us sending such requests). Can you change the status to view public? Thanks!

Edit: give it another go, I think it is public now. I might go back to paying for dropbox after this…
Apparently not, Google and it’s infinite wisdom has decided I cannot make a folder public while on mobile. Sometimes I want to literally slap the people that make these decisions… I’ll keep working on it.
