I went through all the sample photos and I think it's not any better than Sony 85/1.8 regarding LoCA (green cast on hair and such). So if LoCA is what bugs you, maybe the Sony 85/1.4 or Batis 85/1.8 would be the more appropriate options.

I'm in the same boat with Guy as I just picked up the FE 85/1.8 not too long ago and have been very pleased with it (but also a sucker for fast).
If this thing happens to be a new design and you mofos around here stamp your approval on it though...
Consider my interest piqued. I hate that I might end up having a fourth 85mm lens in the closet.
Well if you think you're done with 85, you can start collecting the 100's, many interesting options there too
mmm this lens is intriguing. Cant wait to try it. As I was thinking before changing to a 135mm GM and then getting the Sony 85mm 1.8 to replace my 85mm GM, but I REALLY like the 1.4 isolation of the GM so maybe this way I could end up with the 135mm GM as my main portrait lens while still having a 1.4 85mm lens. That is IF the quality is there.
Then again...letting my 85mm GM go is not going to be easy.
How many of you will need to have both 85 and 135mm focals in your arsenal? There is 135 GM, then 85GM and this.
I imagine most people will chose either and not both?

. None out there that intrigue me more than the Sigma 105 that I already have. Maybe if a GM 100/1.4 comes out at some point. Don't see that happening anytime soon though.

"Need" is a very funny word with a lot of grey area around these parts.

It’s the word justification which for many here even the most abstract justification would work.

I did away with the whole concept of justification a while ago. Come to think of it, I offloaded the word need along with it at the same time.
Frankly speaking, if the new 85 seems like it might be fun to add to the kit or at least play with, I'm getting one to add to the plethora of other lenses I can't/won't justify needing.

No question I want my 135 in my kit but I do need a 85. My Sony 85 1.8 won’t match my Sony 135 but this could possibly be pretty close.
That is what I am hoping, Guy. Thinking about leaving my 85mm GM for the 1.8 was not something I was happy about. I went back to my test photos when I did a comparison review and just cant fall in love with it but maybe getting the 1.4 back will help me deal with the loss..specially since for the most part, I will be using the 135mm 1.8 for most of my work.

They patented that GM at same time as the 135mm and they promised 12 lenses this year
My strategy is "skip the Samyangs and save for the GMs, you'll need every penny" he he
If one needs the 85GM look, why not just get a used 85GM? They seem to go for as low as $1300. You might save a few bucks going the Samyang route, but really at what cost in the long run?

Yes it’s a great thought but some of us are or have had(me) focusing speed issues. The GM 85 is just slow. Great lens no question but acquiring focus in low light or moving subject can be a issue. Myself why I went to the Batis 85 as it’s fast as heck , even the Sony 85 is as well. They just don’t have that look of the 85 1.4. Now if we can get that back with speed it maybe a good option. Honestly I hated selling my GM 85 but it was failing on a big shoot in front of a client. I kept missing focus in the studio. That was embarrassing. I sold it the next day but I do miss the lens.

Me as well the 135 will be my main stay lens for sure but love to get that GM 85 look back with the AF speed we need. Or at least I need.

I think a lot of us are facing that same issue. ...Show more →
AF was precisely the reason I dumped the GM 85. I still have a slow 85 in the Canon 1.2 mk2 and didn't need two which is why I eventually picked up the FE 85/1.8. Put it this way, I'm way happier with the 1.8 for what and how I shoot. If the Sammy/Roki is faster in the AF department than the GM, it will definitely make it into my hands.

I do think a lot of us are thinking the same. The one bummer is no AF/MF switch and no extra custom function. I do like to use MF even on AF lenses but I can tell already this maybe not so hot at having any feel for Manual Focus. Hope I’m wrong

The only problem is the that Samyang is not famous for great AF either! Hopefully, this 85mm will start a new trend...and then a great Samyang 135/2 will emerge!
