Fred is it possible to compare this to FE 85/1.8 ?

I've tried the Samyang 85/1.4 MF on a Canon and although rendering was great, resoution/contrast was weak wide open.
Here is the latest LensRentals's MTF for it. The new 85/1.4 FE is a very impressive lens and aside from carrying the same FL and aperture, they can't be really compared.

I picked up mine in London yesterday and am wondering if someone could help with one thing. I checked the lens's firmware when I got home and it's showing up as "Ver. 03". Is this version 3? I am confused why it would state 03 instead of 3 or 3.00?
Out of interest where in London? Park and Wex don't have stock in yet according to their website (Park reckons tomorrow). Thanks

I drank the Kool aid and bought this lens. Like it so far but not sure of its razor sharp at 1.4.
My 3rd copy was not as sharp not very good AF at all vs the 2 previous copy I tested..wonder if you got a bad one.
I mean, no it does not match my Sigma Art or the last copy of the GM (that I sold to a lucky forum member lol) but the Samyang still was sharp wide open specially near the center areas so I am surprised you are not finding yours very sharp unless like I said, you got a bad one like my 3rd try. :/

Probably just me. It is as sharp as the Sony 85 f/1.8 at f/1.4 so it's sharp. I find the samyang 35mm f/1.4 sharper at f/1.4 though.

My 35 and 85 get a heavy dose of work the next three days. See if all goes well. I知 still worried about AF with the 35. I知 going to try at first to use it on repeatable shots. I have my 18,24,35,85,135 but I知 going to throw my CV 50 1.2 in as backup. My 35/85 are lasers I知 not so worried about being sharp. It痴 AF is where my concerns are, everything is updated including my A7rIII. I値l report

I went back to .02 on my 35mm before I sold it as at least for me, it was giving me the best accuracy.

Yesterday I was also 35/85 (sigma/samyang) most of the time at the wedding of a couple of friends.
Again, the lens is sharp and the rendering beautiful, but the AF is not reliable. This copy is much better than my first one, but still I'm having a lot of misses by a bit, and it's quite annoying. My adapted sigma 35 and canon 70-200 are more reliable than this most of the time. The af accuracy of the samyang is on par with the horrible sony 50 1.8 (maybe a bit better at short distances and worse at medium distances).

I'll need to test my lens outdoors to see if I'm having AF issues.
Can you share what profiles you're using?
Thanks

Received my copy today with firmware 3. It seems well centered. Loving the rendering, and while shooting a stumbling toddler, I found the AF quite accurate, with an impressive hit rate shooting 5fps at F1.4. AF certainly seems fast enough on my a7iii for any of my portrait uses.

Perhaps I have body copy but after shooting with this lens for a couple days I would rate it below all the E mount 85's with AF I have used and owned. There's just something about the rendering, nervous bokeh at times, sharpness (not as good), worst AF and loud to boot, and the color cast that doesn't excite me. For me from best to worst: 85 1.4 GM, Sigma 85 1.4, Sony 85 1.8 (I have a freak copy that is just much sharper), Samyang 85 1.4. i'm returning mine as I rather stick to my 85 1.8 or 85 art combo or maybe I'll just go back to owning a single 85 with the 85 GM. It's a shame because I loved the weight and size of the lens and the price.

I find it very sharp, with more resolution at 1.4 than the Sony 85 1.8 had at 1.8, but a bit less contrast, so in low contrast situations the Sony could appear sharper, just like the sigma 35 1.4 look is more punchy than the Samyang 35 1.4 even if the Samyang 35 has a bit more resolution...
The issue for me is AF.
Here's another sample at 1.4

Sorry I haven't read the entire thread, but what are our thoughts on infinity resolution across the frame for landscape pictures? I was in the market for a Loxia 85, but given the fast aperture, same weight, and lower price of the Samyang 85/1.4, I am a bit intrigued. Still think the Loxia 85 might fit well with my Loxia 21 and CV 40 for rendering, but AF 1.4 could be handy. Thanks.

This is why I love 85mm. You can get shots like these and not have to be too far away. Nice one.
