So my camera store finally has some in stock, and I tried it out on my older A7S. With contrast-detect AF-S, at F1.4 in admittedly low light it is seriously hunting focus and hurting for it. I’m pretty sure it was firmware 1 though.

Interestingly, at F1.8 and F2 AF speed starts improving dramatically.

Just something to keep in mind if you’re looking to buy this lens for an older a7.

Had chance to use mine today...
Impressed with the sharpness. I was on AF-A, at F2.5, with a 3-stop filter on the lens. Only illumination was the modelling lamp. It focussed OK, with Eye-AF hitting the spot - although in one or two instances it focused on the eye furthest from camera until I moved the focus point. This was all with an A7Rii.

Sample:

Eye 100%

This is now one of my favorite lenses. It's my go to lens when packing light and shooting portraits. (When I don't want to carry my 135 GM)

Fred, do you miss your Batis 135mm? By that I mean I know you were a proponent of the Batis, but did you ever not carry it because it was too heavy/bulky like the 135GM may be sometimes? While I would love a 135mm at 1.8, the weight/bulk savings make the Batis very appealing to me and for that reason I try not to look at the 135GM thread too often. The combo of the 85mm and 135 is what I consider a perfect portrait pair and I always carry both.

I love the 135mm focal length but don't miss the Batis 135/2.8 after acquiring the new 135 GM. They are pretty much the same size but the GM is ~320g heavier. I get more flexibility with the GM shooting wide open or at f/2.8 for very round specular highlights even towards the edge. So, if it wasn't for the GM, I would still still be shooting with the Batis 135.

If I want lighter weight for portraits or travel, there is nothing really beating the 550g Samyang 85/1.4 FE.

I feel it's a phenomenal lens that people will be falling all over themselves trying to find reasons to continue hating on it over to justify higher priced options.

I color balance all client work anyway. I like this lens as it compliments its brother the 35 1.4 and it’s a nice option and complimentary to my Sony 135.

But of course if you actually owned the things you seem to whine about I may take your comments more seriously. As it is your comments lately are ignored.

Hey you didn't get the PR memo. It's called "soft warm color".

... "Recently Samyang lens is well known for soft warm color it’s becoming as a unique characteristic of the Samyang lenses." - source.

If I was shooting film or jpeg (did I say film?), I would worry about it but for those shooting RAW and want to a neutral color rendering, here is my LR preset for Samyang lenses. It affects color temperature, tint and a couple individual colors:

So here's my summarised experience with the lens:
- My first copy was missing eye af by a bit too often, even in good light with static people. For objects it was fine though. In some pictures it looked like the right side was a bit softer than the left, but when doing far centering tests, it was very well centered and sharp across the frame at 1.4, so I don't know why it was behaving wierdly sometimes (maybe just mis alignment).

- The second copy I only have it for 30-45 min and sent it vac because it had a big white speck inside. The eye af seemed fine although I only tried near subjects, but the af for far objects was missing always, and the dancing squares in af-c looked really nervous and not moving in a logic way (I don't really know how to explain, but the af was like skipping some areas).

- The third copy was working good for eye af and far objects, and very sharp as well but the right edge (like 15% of the frame in the right) was visibly focusing in a different focal plane closer to the rest of the lens. This was annoying for landscapes, if focusing in the center, the right edge was at f5.6 less sharp than the left edge was at f1.4. Of course you couldn't tell at small sizes, but when pixel peeping you could see how high resolution the lens is, and the right side was just bad. When focusing in the right edge, the rest of the picture was visibly out of focus. But for portraits it was OK, and if not doing centering tests, maybe it was difficult to realise.

- my fourth and last copy is well centered, also incredibly sharp for me at 1.4 and it's focusing as the third one.

So, for every copy, the sharpness is about the same, this is my sharpest lens now and the sharpest thing I've tested at 1.4 (but of course I don't have some expensive glasses as some people here).
I love the rendering more than most of the samples I've seen online, maybe because in the light conditions and subjects we're used to, we can compare a bit better with our other experiences.
It has very minimal ca and purple fringing, in some back-lit samples I've found just a bit, and in others absolutely 0, it's impressive.
The color is warmer than Sony lenses, but it's actually similar to my canon 70-200 f4L, and when applying my presets in Lightroom, it actually looks really good.
The af in video is trash, and in photo is still missing some by a bit in af-c, but much better than my first copy.

I'm really loving the lens, sharper in the corners at 1.4 than what my Sony fe 85 1.8 was at f2.8, with much better rendering and bokeh. Still my most used lens will be my sigma 35 for its versatility focal length, but otherwise this samyang could easily become my favourite and most used lens from now on. It's that good.

Pd: it's weird sometimes I feel it has too much depth of field at 1.4, like Luis Gabriel saw in his tests, maybe because it's so sharp? Because it's a real 85 right? And real 1.4...

This lens as a 85 1.4 lens tested extremely well on Big Bronco. It’s a little laser maybe not at my Sony 135 buts that okay. I was after something that has AF faster than the GM 85 but more important has a far better look than Sony and Batis 85 1.8 lenses. So it solves both things I was after. My go to will be the Sony 135 but I still need a 85 no getting around it. Now I just got the 35 1.4 again and it’s a laser. I’m still in the process of figuring out AF on both these lenses as I just need to shoot more with them staring tomorrow I have some back to back jobs that should tell me what I need to know. Yea hate not having the functional buttons like Sony’s but I can deal with it without a big hard ache. Actually I reset up some custom buttons that may work better. Nice thing is they are light weight so counters some of the Sony 135 in overall bag weight

Same distance (both wide open)

Which is which?

A is Sammy I reckon, DoF is a bit more and at same distance the 135 should have less DoF. If they were shot so they were equally framed the 135 would have less DoF. IQ looks too close to call. Well done Sammy if they can hang with the 135 GM. Might look at replacing my 85 f/1.8 FE, but the Sammy QC lottery always has me nervous.

Yes, just as you described.
I was just showing what's possible with both lenses wide open. To equalize things, it would be better to have the 135 GM @f/2.2.

A few more rendering samples from yesterday with my final copy of the lens. All corrections turned off in camera, these are SOOC, I think using the EOSHD v4 profile (maybe one or two were in standard)

1.4

I picked up mine in London yesterday and am wondering if someone could help with one thing. I checked the lens's firmware when I got home and it's showing up as "Ver. 03". Is this version 3? I am confused why it would state 03 instead of 3 or 3.00?

Yes, that's version 3, it's the way samyang names it...

The new one is so much sharper (at 1.4 is night and day difference), almost no CA (the old one had a lot of ca and purple fringing) and much better flare resistance. But the mf may still win in rendering, it was just super beautiful.

I've tried the Samyang 85/1.4 MF on a Canon and although rendering was great, resoution/contrast was weak wide open.

Here is the latest LensRentals's MTF for it. The new 85/1.4 FE is a very impressive lens and aside from carrying the same FL and aperture, they can't be really compared.
