Lovely shots, Roberta. I did more testing of the Sigma 60-600 Sports on the Sony A6400 today. I am quite happy with the sharpness of the lens. Need to do more BIF testing but BIF opportunities don't come often when I need them.
Hi Douglas,
Nice images. However, unless I am mistaken, you just missed focus on the eye of the Great Blue Heron first image.

Thanks Rich. The eye of that image looks pretty sharp in Lightroom, but I wouldn't be surprised one bit if I missed the eye. At 600mm the Sigma 60-600 gets pretty heavy after holding the front of the lens for more than 30-40 seconds, it's like holding a dumbbell with your arm stretched all the way.

Hi Douglas,
You also added the last image of the Great Blue Heron and I suspect that you just missed focus on the eye of that one as well. But, since these are as you describe them as hand held for that much a length of time with so much weight, that may be the issue. At this point in my life and particularly after breaking both wrists in a bicycle and car accident more than 25 years ago I can't hold a camera as steady as I once did and wouldn't even try to hand hold such a long optic.

Thanks for pointing that out, Rich. Really appreciate it. I uploaded these two in question to my Flickr. Here are the links. I think they look a bit sharper in Flickr? Totally possible I missed the eyes.

They look better on Flckr. Could be resizing here on FM or FM itself degrading the sharpness. Sorry if I was incorrect. We were always taught sharp eyes are generally the most important part of a good wildlife image. So, I would normally focus on the eye of the animal, but my lenses were tripod mounted and the subject was relatively static; that was including when Leica USA had loaned my the 800mm f5.6 Apo-Modular lens for a month in 1998. At least at the time an unbelievable optic.

Thanks Rich. It does seem to me that even on Flickr, the body looks a bit sharp than the eyes. I think you are correct. I wish LR could show you where the focus point is. I remember when I was shooting Canon, their own raw processor (Canon Digital Photo Professional, or DPP) showed where the focus point was.

Wow, I can rarely get a picture of one of these and you got a beautiful couple!!
Thanks.
They're building a nest a quarter of a mile from our house in the heart of the city.
A few people came out and questioned me about what I was doing in front of their homes.
I pointed to the hawks, showed them the back of the camera, and everything is fine.
