Just tested this and my Z6 does the same thing.
Not sure of the reasoning, but would there be a downside to doing that when changing lenses in a dusty environment to keep dust off sensor? I’m thinking of implementing this as part of lens change workflow.
Quick (and likely stupid) question guys. I'm renting a Z6 from Lensrentals along with a XQD card (never used a xqd card before) - its on its way to me now. I normally transfer images to my iMac (2015) by using the built in SD card reader. I never thought about the the xqd card transfer process until now - should I just attach the Z6 directly to my iMac to transfer images?
You can transfer images through USB with the proper cable (supplied with the camera). As you probably know you can use Nikon Transfer to rename the files etc.
You can connect the camera directly to your computer and transfer the files from the XQD card (the camera has to be turned on).
If you decide to get a Z6 after the rental buy a dedicated XQD card reader, it will be much faster and allow you to update the camera's firmware (you can't do it when connecting the camera itself via USB).

First, it's not stupid question at all. I never like using cable to transfer photos between PC and cameras, so I understand.
I always use SD card reader with my Sony A7R3, Fuji.... When I received my Z6, I didn't have XQD card reader (adaptor) with me and I felt transferring photos between my Z6 and Macbook is a headache. Without card reader, my Mac's Photo didn't recognize any files from XQD card. Also I had to download Nikon's Wireless Transmitter Utility to make it work!
So, I bought the Sony XQD reader and got it today. It works like a charm. Very fast transfer and Photo recognizes XQD card via the reader immediately, automatically. Importing photos from Z6 to Mac becomes so easy.
Also a great news, my Macbook (macOS Mojave) is compatible with all Z6's RAW files! I were worried about this.
I strongly recommend to buy XQD card reader/adaptor.
I have a quick question for everyone. Please help!
After I push the XQD card down in its slot to eject it out partly, then I have to use fingers to pull the card out of the slot quite difficultly. I have to use an extended force that shouldn't be. I'm worried that it can break something inside the slot sometime. Totally different from removing SD cards from 2 lots in my Sony A7R3 or Fuji XE3.
Is this normal or something wrong with my Z6's card slot? I'm still in return period. Please advise.

Thanks so much for the input, but I'm not sure I want to buy a XQD card reader just for a 1 week rental!!!
I typically import with LR. Can anyone confirm if I will be able to import into LR using the Z6 attached directly to my iMac?

Mine is snug but removes easily from the card slot.

Could anyone also confirm that your SQD cards can be easily removed from card slot, just like you do with SD cards/Sony A7 series or Fuji's cameras?
Mine is totally different from what I have done with SD cards & Sony/Fuji cameras.

Comparing to D850 SD card:
- SD card slides out of the slot without any resistance (probably because it doesn't have a socket/connector)
- XQD card requires a bit of initial pull to get it out, after the socket disconnects it slides out
without any resistance.

Thank you for the information. Did you mean you need to push on the card at first (as the direction of insertion), so the card is ejected out a little bit by itself (about 1/4 of the length of card), then do you have to pull it hard to get it out of the slot? Or it just slides our?
I have to pull it really hard since there is a strong resistance, even it's ejected out of the connection sockets.
I do exactly as this instruction in the manual, however, when remove the card out after it's partial ejected, I have to pull it quite hard (step 2). I mean It's not easily slides out at all. If it's just my camera experiencing this then I need to return my Z6 to exchange since it can damage small internal metal parts inside the slot.

I would first test another XQD card as the card itself maybe the issue
I push the card, it slides out a bit, I tug at it (requires some force but I wouldn't classify it as having to pull hard'). Slides out freely after that.
My XQD card also has this issue. After pushing down to eject it, I can feel that it is loose but seems to get stuck on something on the way out. I have to wiggle it a bit everytime to get it out.
