Design minimalism: stark, angular and awkward, disrespect for the shape of human hands, the hands of their customers. Recessed rubberized lens rings. Aluminium. 800 grams (RX1 is 507g 'wet'). Will scratch easily, and many will drop it.
It's huge: 142mm wide x 93mm high; RX1 is 113mm x 65mm, a7r is 127mm x 94mm (better comparison than IBIS cameras).
"I am not sure who this camera is for?"
They say so: "we are focusing on *ambitious, professional creatives* who want to produce their photographic experiences quickly and efficiently, and inspire as many people on the Internet as possible."

I like the idea of a giant screen and literally not one single other design choice they made.
Amazed how many of you are anxious to have to replace your entire camera when your memory "card" fails or starts slowing down. Is the battery non-removable as well? Hopefully both will be more reliable than the iPhones I've owned.
Guess this thing is for fighter pilots? Seemingly very low eye point and no eyecup whatsoever, so you sure can't use it if you wear glasses.
Where are all the buttons? I need buttons. Touchscreens are fine for swiping through image review and that's about it.
Why is the grip shaped that way? It bulges out way too far in toward the lens? Whose hand is this for?
And I would've rather had a 75/2, but of course that one doesn't count as a flaw

I actually like the look of this camera. I have owned an RX1 and I have rented an RX1RII, so I am very open to having a fixed lens camera like this.
I am not sure I want to be post processing on the back of a camera, though. I am in wait and see mode. But I am intrigued. Sure would be nice to the RX1RIII emerge soon to make my decision much tougher. Of course, the price of the Zeiss could make my decision for me.

I am wondering who would perform service on this device. At least Apple can diagnose over Wi-Fi & replace batteries.

The promotional video shows the photographer using the touchscreen while looking through the EVF.
I'm also hoping "MULTI" means multispot metering. I really miss that on my RX1.

As an early millennial in the tech industry, I find the camera body to be far more compelling than the lens. This is exactly what a well executed clean sheet design of a 2010-era century rangefinder-style camera should look like and have in terms of features. Every other true camera out there is stuck in the 1950's through the early 2000s with respect to their layouts, software and basic core design concepts.
Another techie here, but a lot older than you. And I love this thing. I doubt it really depends on age, but more attitude and an awareness of design. Way back in the glass TTY era, we had a Xerox Star (earliest mass-produced GUI machine) on loan in the "toy room" opposite my office, and earlier yet my father had a fashion business and the house was full of what later became design classics.

There was a time when the minimalist camera used to be a body with just the basic buttons. Leica?
This is the digital age avtaar of minimalism.
But suits consumer cameras more.
Are they going for “rich prosumer” like Hassy?

Bring on the RX1R-III
God it's massive. 800 grams is as heavy as the A7r with the 35mm f2.
If they just put some storage into the RX1R2 and gave it a makeover with wifi, usb-c and proper tethering support, I'd be all over it. And they gave us this...monstrosity.

Well I think the original RX1 wins over both the RX1R II and the ZX1 in the weight department, because it includes a pop-up flash. Not having a flash along kind of throws away the advantage of a leaf shutter. I just weighed my RX1, wearing its Sony-original hood, protection filter, and lightweight plastic cap and it came to 540g.
That said, if it's the only camera gear I'm carrying, anything below around 1kg is roughly equal. If it's robust enough just to wear around the shoulder without any bag (which IMO the RX1 is not) there's some weight saving there too.

Straight up no sugar coat - with all the options on the market this one looks underwhelming and likely overpriced. Competing with the Leica Q which I don’t think anyone gives two shits about anymore.

IMO, the ZX1's major downside is weight and size. Even the 50MP medium format Fuji 50R is only 690g and there is a pancake GF lens coming soon.
Only a superb 'alien IQ' 35mm lens and a down to earth price could save this camera.

I have to go against the grain here and call the design amazing. Very beautiful. I am sure there will be leather half cases etc to help grippage if that is an issue.
If WiFi works good, so that whenever you shoot with WiFi connection, the raw files can be immediately stored in a cloud, and maybe synced to my computer automatically I would actually consider it as my daily camera, for family and stuff. I have a feeling the price would be very high though for a family second camera.
Imagine shooting in the woods or whatever, you come home, the camera connect to WiFI and starts transferring files to the computer while I put the gear away. Maybe I am just dreaming

- Zeiss
- 512Gb internal flash storage and a full frame sensor
- down to earth pricing

Well, that's quite an ugly little beast.. (reminds me a lot of the Leica T btw)
Interesting the shift from the 35/2 Sonnar to Distagon design, curious to see how they compare, for sure close-up performance will suffer, since the new lens has only 30cm MFD vs 20cm of the Sonnar. For sure now looks a bit more clear why nor Zeiss nor Sony were to eager to do a compact AF 35mm F1.8/2 in E-mount, it could have totally stealed the show from this "stunt".
Curious about the "non standard size" new Sony sensor, wonder if there is something special going on with that or they simply realized that 42MP were simply too much for the lens (it already looks like that on the RX1RII).
I just hope that Sony hasn't surrendered completely the RX1-series to Zeiss to get.. this..
