Took the plunge today. Couldn't resist with a $1000AUS off the lens and adapter kit. Hopefully have it next week sometime.
I got a couple of shoots coming up and will use it and the 850 side by side.
Main reason I got it is for my newborn photography. The 850 shutter always startles the babies at first, so looking forward to silent shooting.
Also with focus points across the frame it should help with better angles.

Interesting. However I would be a bit surprised if it is better than Sony. As far as I know, Nikon dslr sensor cover is a bit thinner but not nearly as thin as Leica SL or M10. I will order Novoflex adapter soon and try it out for sure.

The results from the test indicate it is better or equivalent to the M10 so let us see how it performs in hand. I would expect the results will be much better than the Sony's as the sensor covers is less than half the thickness of the A7rIII. I know from my own tests in the past with the A7r with and without the Kolari modification the results were quite dramatic. The Z7 sensor cover was measured at 1.1mm so this is very similar to the first few Kolari mods. The latest Kolari mod is now down to 0.2mm.

The other interesting aspect is we may find other third party lenses may also perform better with the thinner cover glass

I see. My mistake, I thought I saw somewhere that Nikon cover is only slightly thinner than Sony. This is a good news since Insold my SL, I still have a few m mount lenses that dont play well with A7r iii. My local dealer just told me that they expect Kipon adapter for Z7 in the next few weeks so I will wait for that as it should be quite a bit less expensive than Novoflex. Curious to see how z7 would go with 35/1.4 8e and 24/3.8.

I found after the Kolari mod on the A7r the 35 Lux FLE worked great so I would expect the same with Z7 without the color balance issues

Opps, I mean to say 35/2 8e. I think 35/1.4 FLE is already very good on A7r ii without any modification but my favourite would be Zeiss 35/1.4 zm. WATE should also work well. So with m mount adapter, there should be plenty of small and lightish manual lenses to choose from and if it works as well as M10, I will be a very happy person.

Well, I finally gave into temptation (after initially cancelling my preorder) and ordered a Z7. Should be in my hands next week.. thankfully I'm headed to New Orleans then, so didn't get charged sales tax even though B&H has started to do so in most states (not yet in Louisiana).

One of my mentors has been posting a ton of shots with it (he’s a Nikon ambassador) and I was either going to get a z7 or a Leica Q. The Z7 seemed like a more rational choice?

I’ll be doing a lot of natural light shoots for holiday family portraits, so looking forward to testing it out on those somewhat demanding shoots with kiddos running around. I’ll also have a chance to test it out with my Godox and Profoto strobe systems, as well as test out how well it does tethered.

Glad I kept my ED FL version 70-200 f2.8, as Matt Gramger’s lens tests are showing that it autofocuses faster than the VR2 on the FTZ adapter. Also excited to shoot with the 58 f1.4G on it - even with the adapter, it makes the z7 about the same size as the A7R3 plus Zeiss Planar 50 f1.4

Should be a great shoot! The 70-200E is just a crazy awesome lens. I just spent about 10 minutes yesterday evening during the rain storms and just captured a honey eater in low light and the images are just so sharp. I have tested it on the Z7 and it is very good and obviously still a steep learning curve to get the most out of the AF system.

The 58G on the Z7 feels very good and much lighter than the A7rIII with the FE 50/1.4, about 400gms. I would do a fine tune AF test as it is a unique lens. I have heard that it may benefit from marginal adjustment < +/-5 which sounds counter intuitive.

Would you mind checking if there are electronic contacts in the battery bay that would hint towards dial/shutter button functionality in the yet to be released vertical grip? The a7 cameras have those extra terminals in the battery bay for the same purpose, so hoping the z7 has the same...

I took two walks in the last 2 days with Z7, 35mm S f1.8, 24-70 S f/4 and also 70-200 f/4 with FTZ.

The photos were taken all with Auto1 white balance and matrix metering, IBIS is on, on the first day I used also a tripod especially when I compared the 35mm to the 24-70, all other are handheld.

I shot in RAW and converted then with ViewNX-i without any changes, not even crop or leveling. On 4-5 pictures I changed exposure because, mainly when I shot into sun or forgot to reset exposure compensation.

The pictures are on https://www.smugmug.com/gallery/n-2J2LqG

An interesting interview (podcast) with Canadian Wildlife Pro, Brad Hill. He speaks mostly about the his surprise of how well the Z7 does as a wildlife camera (also see the reactivated Thread on Steve Perry's pre-release video). Brad Hill also discusses the 180-400 f4E TC (a lens he lauds) and the 500 PF, which he does not have (as yet)

I'm posting this link also in the official Z7 thread

The 70-200f4 perform great in AF-S and AF-C single however if I choose AF-C wide or small area, it has tendency lock to background. I seldom have this issue with D850, though there is no Wide/small area mode for it but in auto area mode with face detection, D850 almost never fail.

Z7 may not perform the best for wheel chair spec readers. However it slowly climbs up the ladder for me from initial B~B+ rating to a A after each trip and continuing using and customizing it, I would give it the same solid score as D850. No, D850 is still more versatile tool that suit for everything you throw on it. However, you should not ignore Z7’s merits over it such as: size and weight, light and high performance zoom and future S glass, very silent shutter, you can handhold it get better sharpness images, all advantage of EVF shooting without problems other system I had (I am a hardcore OVF fan), video and IBIS. Adapting pretty much any glasses…..

I enjoy using it very much even with a few problems that I hope Nikon are not purposely crimp it. Such as no focus confirmation for AIS, ZF.2 or any manual lens, no aperture linkage for AIS lens so no EXIF, No option for auto aperture and stop down shooting until f5.6, (it would be nice to change f5.6 to f2.8 or have option to shooting WO), no control ring for FTZ adapter, FTZ adapter interfere Arca type plate, no multiple shot raw output like D850, no AF mode change on fly (for D850, I can use AFON to bring auto area or 3D tracking instantly, for no reason Z7 remove this option) etc….

However, even with these, It is THE best MILC under current market for me, it is largely a small D850 for my use.

I don’t visit Nikon forum daily and created here in Alt forum
The thread has different priority than Nikon forum here and it is more alt people oriented. If you are interested, you can drop in and share some love and joy EVEN with native Nikon Lenses. I look forward to receive my Leica M adapter for Z7. With 1.1mm sensor stack and 45M iso64, this is an ultimate image making machine.

Gorgeous shots!

And I agree with your thoughts. For paid shoots, I always bring 2-3 bodies, and it'd be nice to have the Z7 as my backup without taking up too much space and essentially have no compromise in image quality vs my D850s. I occasionally do set photography with video/sound rolling as I shoot stills, and the silent shutter on the Z7 is going to be a great tool for that. The fact that I can essentially just buy the body, and use all of my nikon lenses with little compromise in terms of AF performance makes it a no brainer to me. Also from a post-processing standpoint, I know that (in theory) I can load up a thousand Z7 images along with a thousand D850 images, and assuming all my settings and environment is the same, I can post-process them in batches in the same way - which is a time saver versus trying to match up colors and such with another brand that has orange spray tan skintones

I am eagerly waiting for specs on the vertical grip - hoping the initial rumors about it not having controls are simply just uninformed reactions to the non-functional mockup at the release event, as it'd make absolutely no sense to me to have a vertical grip that simply just has more batteries in it and no shutter button, af joystick and dials.

I feel you don't need silent shutter for Z7, with EFCS, it is so quiet that it may meet most of events need quietness. If you do enable silent shutter for Z7, the read out speed is only 1/15s and with delay for next shot.

With latest Adobe update, Z7 file is as delicious as D850s'.

I am pretty sure grip will be a battery extension only, there is no electronic contact on Z7. It is not a problem for me but I agree it will be an issue for many.
