Tracking with AF-c under auto AF mode is similar to 3D focusing except that you need to press ok once when in auto AF mode to bring on a square box in the center. Point the square box at a subject and press AF on or half press shutter and the camera will start tracking. I wish Nikon just assign this mode as a separate focus mode instead of bunching this with auto AF so there is none of this ok button non sense. Tracking is fairly good and it wont lose tracking even if something block the view

If this is all true then this is a pretty poor implementation of low light AF. Pretty much anyone who is shooting live actions events, sports or wildlife will find this pretty annoying and will want to chuck that thing against a brick wall.

For hight resolution FF body, live action, sports or wildlife, especially in low light, D850 is still the one to beat for sure. I am not getting rid of my D850 anytime soon.

Yeah, the D5 and D850 are the kings for now.

Yeah same here! I love my D850! With the Z7 you can change focus mode (like the af selector) with fn 2 but you take away a function you can assign to this button by removing the af selector. I use function 2 for level, pv for group af.

I guess I am too spoiled with the D850 and I should not see this camera as a competitor for the D850 but the Z7 is 200$ more expensive. I won't post anymore in this thread, I start to sound like tap, lol!

I see Z7 as a good complement to my D850. Up to now, I often bring A7r iii along with my D850.
A7r iii most of the time will have small manual focus lens on it which make it a very nice small package for street, casual shooting etc. Z7 however will go one step further as it can also work as a back up to D850
as they can share all the F mount lenses if neccessary while using Z mount, M mount or whatever other lenses that I want to bring. Sharing the same batteries and charger is also nice when traveling.

I could see it as a complement to the D850, it will surpass the d850 for precision af imo. No more micro af adjusment, 90% af coverage, focus peaking throught viewfinder, pinpoint af throught evf, silent shooting with evf, live preview exposure, dof. It is not only negative points but they price it too high imo. The z6 is price pretty good imo but I like high mp camera and the z6 af seems inferior(273 points vs 493), I want the best af possible. I mostly do wildlife and sports, so I'll wait a little bit but I might change my mind! I have G.A.S. and I hang out here, not good!! Lol. I know I would love the z7 for wildlife stills as I love small dof and with a 600mm at f4 or 200mm at f2 you have to nail the af or it shows right away with the D850. I guess I'll improve my technique and see if I still might consider the Z7! I had the d800e/d810/d500/d850. I think I can skip a generation, we'll see how strong I am, lol.

There are several people who are having the same idea.

I was looking at a Lee filter on the B&H website and was amazed to see that they are closed from Sunday afternoon (23rd) until Wednesday October 3rd. Yeah I understand it’s a holiday but how will it affect shipping of the Z7 which is released on the 27th.

Isn't it one of the advantage of mirrorless? You shouldn't need micro af adjustment since it is focusing directly on the sensor??

I don't think this is being targeted as a sports or wildlife camera, which something like the D5 definitely is.

From Nikon's site - "All-around performance. All-around amazing." Put aside the hyperbole, it does seem like an "all rounder", which is fine for what it is. This is an additional tool, not a replacement, it's their first entry into the ML market.

I'm looking for a third body for sports end zone "jube" shots and post game on field type of stuff. it's to complement my two D5. I've been considering a Fuji XT-2 or XT-3 with the 18-55/2.8-4, which is a pretty good small size and lightweight third body for me. I've decided to hold off until I can try out a Z6 with the 35/1.8 Z. It's a little heavier and bulkier than the Fuji option, but so far from what I'm reading, the Z6 AF would be really good for this application.

However, I'm not going to make any predeterminations until I can actually spend some time with the Z6 and 35/1.8. I don't trust reviews of prerelease models and/or firmware from someone that's had a day or two with it and doesn't use it like I would.

No, Z6/7 certainly is not billed as sport or wildlife camera nor is D850. Both are labelled as all around camera. However, D850 Af performance is so good that I sold my D500 as I find that what wild life and sport I might do, D850 is more than capable. However, Z7 falls a bit short in this aspect of all around camera though. A7r iii may still be slightly ahead of Z7 as well for this purpose. I will know better once I pick up my Z7 so I can compare both side by side.

I just phoned B&H to check an item and asked about shipping. They are not shipping anything until the 4th or 5th. If anybody was expecting a Z7 on the 27th or 28th I guess you’re SOOL.

I mean, B&H and Adorama close for the same Holidays year after year, this shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone...

Sorry, not being Jewish it completely slipped my mind.

I was simply advising anyone that purchased a Z7 from them not to expect them on the release date.

I agree overall
but it's still crazy to most of us who forget the jewish holidays
probably one of the busiest weeks for photographers of the year, with weddings being in PRIME TIME, among other reasons.

I did NOT preorder with adorama or bh
I chose a vendor who is not closed for the week.

I am getting a Z7 with adaptor and zoom, 35 1.8S
I have been pretty excited about all this, but lately, I've been a little foggy.
I have decided to be open minded about this, but I'm leaning towards not keeping it.
Mentioning all this here in case someone forgot to preorder and wants me to keep them in mind.
cheers
