I have a lot of lenses but if I am going to add one it will be something that allows me to do something I cannot do now like a Canon 17mm T/S or 200-600GM if they make it and the rumored 135 Sony.

I agree. If they can't get the weight and size of the 105 f1.4 close to the 85 f1.4 or 135 f1.8 then I don't see it as a practical choice. It does have a wow and prestige factor though.

So, it looks to be a DSLR design with an adapted version dedicated for the E-mount? Meaning smart adapter built in...this will be heavy!!

If a prime in this focal rang is 2.8, I would rather have a zoom ;-). So, 105mm 1.4 is perfect and what I'm looking for. However, I hate the lens hood if it's not removable, and Sigma lenses are heavy. I feel like the Nikon 105 1.4 is smaller, plus its lens hood is removable. Will people plan to sell their Batis 135/2.8 ;-)

NO but if there was a 200f2 in this size than maybe. Problem is I’m getting by with the 135 2.8 which is basically the same as a 70-200 2.8 everyone and there brother has used for decades. Now we have even better high ISO cams. Even this lens at 1.4 might just be unusable for the extreme paper thin DOF. You must likely would stop down to F2 to cover yourself or more. For me too risky when money is on the line . I don’t take those chances. I learned decades ago cover your cute little bun.

You can say that about any lens. I don't see where the 85GM fits - you can crop the 50ZA, I don't see where the 50ZA fits, you can just crop the 35ZA etc. etc.

or use your 100 STF so what does it accomplish other than if you really like that focal length.

100 STF is totally different, firstly it gives you a completely different look to the background and OOF highlights, which not everybody likes, and secondly the 105/1.4 is going to be much better in low light.

At the end of the day it's just a faster version of the many 100/2 and 105/2 lenses that already exist. Where this fits is a lens that gives slightly more reach than your typical 85/1.4, but is more usable indoors than a 135mm. I expect this to be very popular with wedding photographers.

Fully agree. The 85GM and 85Batis we have are great already. The 85GM can be easily cropped to 105/1.8 equivalent on the A7riii with 30MP left and shallow enough DOF. A 135/1.8 would give me the possibility to crop to 160/2.2 and 200/2.8. I would prefer the 135. However, I guess it will not be before autumn that we get our hands on the 135 for Sony. So will buy the Sigma 135/1.8 instead first.

To me this not really an apples to apples thing. I have the 85mm 1.4 GM and the Sigma 135mm 1.8 Art so a 105mm 1.4 wouldnt be a great choice to add to my current lenses but it is STILL a lens I would love to test be it in E mount or Canon EF since I have on problem for my work using the Sigma with the A7R3.
Sure you can crop the 85mm 1.4 but just like there is a clear DOF/Blur amount between 85mm 1.4 and 1.8, there will be one with 105mm 1.8 vs 1.4.
Saying "shallow enough DOF" is just a matter of opinion. To me the GM 1.4 DOF is what I wanted vs the 1.8 I tested yet for others 1.8 is more than enough or even the 90mm 2.8 is more than enough.
As I have the 135mm 1.8 which is beyond amazing, the 105mm 1.4 may not be as interesting now but still I WILL try it.
Of course, maybe I could move to a 105mm 1.8 and 200mm F2 setup at some point...who knows. These days I focus more on the lighting and posing than changing lenses but its always fun to play with new ones.

Completely agree. I had the Nikon 105mm f/1.4E and loved it when I shot weddings. It replaced the 85mm f/1.4G. The only thing was the slower focusing, obviously because there was a lot more glass to move. Sadly, I have no use for this lens in my arsenal these days. I can't justify this over or in conjunction with my 70-200 GM.

Big, heavy, paper thin DoF? I'll find a way to manage. Now I just need to see if the IQ is worth it. IMO if this is one of the first Sigma Emount Art lenses to be introduced, IQ will be stunning. Will have to see if the AF is consistent.

IMO Sigma made a very wise choice to lead their new Emount Art line with these specs. WOW.

No, but if this is DSLR optical & AF motor design I don't see why we should expect this to be any better in focusing than a Art 85/1.4 or ART 135/1.8 when combined with MC-11.

To my understanding there are no magical AF motors available that would work equally well in PDAF and CDAF for heavy focus groups such as one surely found 105/1.4. Sony DDSSM motors (as found in ZA50/1.4 and GM 85/1.4) are ok, but they are a bit noisy and are a bit of "compromize in everything".

DSLRs these days have to have decent performance in live view using OSPDF and CDAF, especially give the importance of video. So I think we can expect this to be as optimized as possible for that, which means that we can hope that the Sony version will focus as well as it would have had it only been designed for Sony FE.

Of course, a 1.4/105 will be a challenge to focus quickly regardless.

I dont t think a 105 mm lens will be any heavier just because it works on DSLRs; the mirrorless advantage is well gone by then ,,,

That’s what’s clever about choosing this design: they can produce a huge halo lens, and make it for FE as well as DSLRs with no compromise. Maybe they will target their noirma and wides, which do need distinct designs, to come out closer to Canikon mirrorless...

Of course it will be heavy, This is a kilo brick for sure.

What are they thinking with this heavy pos?

We have a native 85 1.4. already. Who would buy this?

This definitely made the GAS want list, but I don't know if it really makes sense, given I already have the 135 ART.

For now, I'll have to settle for living vicariously through the forum.

Maybe me?
I’ll never take it with me traveling, for sure.
But 1.4/105 has a very different look from 85. It’s basically the DOF equivalent of 1.8/135 in a shorter lens that is more use indoors.

I agree it’s a specialist lens. I’m not getting rid of my Batis 1.8/85 which is nice and compact.

But I might consider getting this instead of a 1.4/85, as the “home and special events” portrait lens I was considering, as it’s more different in look from the Batis

I’ve got the Sony 135mm f1.8 right now, and I really would like a lens that natively works with my a7r. I wouldn’t mind going a little wider and keeping the same DoF blurring capabilities. Color me intrigued

If you look at the comparison with the Nikon 105/1.4E the two lenses are similar in size particularly if you remove the lens hoods. For most indoors shots and even outside in the shade I don't use lens hoods.

There is a large difference in designing f/1.4 glass for 85mm and 105mm and if you are seriously into portraits/weddings this should be a great lens. I have not found any specs regarding weight. The Nikon 105E is 985gms is largish but being a squat design the ergonomics work well. I suspect this will be the same with the 105 Art.

Sigma Art series have really raised the bar on IQ and seriously great value. The 105 Art should be a superb lens in the FE mount and recently the AF issues are no longer an issue with the latest iterations. If the lens comes in under 990gms it will be great and leave off the monstrous lens hood. Ergonomically with the Nikon 105E at 985 gms I have no issues for shoots

As it seems to come with its own lens foot, it will certainly not be lightweight, in my opinion. Filter size is 105mm, too. The 85/1.4 Art is already 1.1kg, so I guess it weighs around 1.3-1.5 kg.

They are probably thinking "people are buying the Nikon 105mm f/1.4 for $2000, if we undercut them on price and release ours for a lot of mounts we'll sell enough of them to recoup the development and production costs".
