That photo seems to show the lens with a removable hood, so the actual lens size is (perhaps) less gigantic than it first appears. Also, the mount seems to have some parts protruding from the rear, which none of my e-mount lenses have. Do Canon or Nikon mounts have those little protrusions?
I've been considering adapting the Nikon 105mm f/1.4 for a while, suffice to say I'll definitely be getting this
I agree with David, the e-mount version will be optically the same as the Canon/Nikon version but with a tube on the back. Not that there's anything wrong with this approach, I don't think they would gain anything by putting elements further back.
But it does leave me with a dilemma of whether to get the Canon version and have the option of using it with a speedbooster for video, plus easier resale if for some reason I don't like it (or develop some sort of physical deformity from using it!) or the Sony version for convenience and possibly better AF...
You know... i was just getting to love my 85FE and now this comes along. Rethinking my kit to be 55/105 and move the 85. Maybe I’ll sit tight and see what Sony brings up with the rumored 135 1.8 being bounced around. If all exist it’ll probably come down to price vs quality for me. Loved sigma art on canon.

What's going on with that hood? Is it reversed in which case it's strange that it gets narrower toward the end. If it's not reversed then it looks like a really shallow hood that mounts very deeply on the lens. The only thing that makes sense to me is if it is a sliding design.
Love to see it as a built in sliding hood. I wish all companies did this. Not sure what they are thinking in that. Are none of them photographers. Reversed hoods are slow to install and for a photographer that needs to move fast and many of us are . Than it’s a challenge. Sliding hoods would be great maybe just a slight twist to unlock extend than twist to lock in. Solve a huge issue and I can’t see how that would cost any more money than what they currently do

Now maybe a nice setup would be 55 /105 and eliminate the 85 in your bag. Not sure for me it replaces my Batis 135 which would be really hard to pry from my death grip on it. Now if there was a 200 2.8 in place than it would make sense for me. Not sure why they have not figured out a 200 2.8 yet. Use to be a very popular lens in Canon for instance. Somebody needs to make one
Guy,
I would like a 200 f/2.8 too, but I think with the quality of the 70-200 f/2.8 zooms the popularity of 200 f/2.8 primes has really dropped. I don't know if we will see one from Sony for a long time. I think our best chance may be a Batis, which if it is anything like the 135 I would like very much.

I million years ago I had a Nikkor 135mm ƒ2.8 that had the slickest built-in sliding hood. It screwed/locked firmly in place, either stowed or deployed, and you could never misplace it. Always wished other lenses had a similar arrangement.

If true FE-Emount, and not just a bolt-on to a DSLR design, what a way for Sigma to jump into the FE system!
Why would a lens of the focal length require a special design fo FE mount? Are you thinking that the f/1.4 At 105mm requires consideration of cover glass thickness?

The mirrorless rumors site says the photo shows the Canon version of the lens.
That leaked image says the filter diameter is only 49mm which is pretty odd. The old version (discontinued years ago) seemed to have a 62mm filter thread unless I am mistaken. If the 49mm figure is true you can draw the size conclusion from here - it's going to be pretty long and thin.
Incidentally the 49mm filter thread is a hallmark of Sony E mount lenses... Some food for thought.

Now the 70 macro looks interesting but want to know size and weight and it can keep up against the CV 65

Love the focal length and 1.4...will hate the weight. More interested in a remade Sigma 135 1.8 for the Sony mount.
Fully agree. The 85GM and 85Batis we have are great already. The 85GM can be easily cropped to 105/1.8 equivalent on the A7riii with 30MP left and shallow enough DOF. A 135/1.8 would give me the possibility to crop to 160/2.2 and 200/2.8. I would prefer the 135. However, I guess it will not be before autumn that we get our hands on the 135 for Sony. So will buy the Sigma 135/1.8 instead first.

No, but if this is DSLR optical & AF motor design I don't see why we should expect this to be any better in focusing than a Art 85/1.4 or ART 135/1.8 when combined with MC-11.
To my understanding there are no magical AF motors available that would work equally well in PDAF and CDAF for heavy focus groups such as one surely found 105/1.4. Sony DDSSM motors (as found in ZA50/1.4 and GM 85/1.4) are ok, but they are a bit noisy and are a bit of "compromize in everything".
Based on the pic (said to show Canon EF version, "DG" text indicates this is an FF DSLR lens) available, with the "windowed" distance scale (never seen such in Sony E mount mirrorless lens) I'm gonna have to quess that if the pic is real there will be no FE mount version; this would be 1st AF lens that uses same optical/AF-formula for DSLR and mirrorless. Hope I'm wrong though. Would be a very nice addition to FE lens selection, kind of a perfect match for Sony Eye AF.

The discontinued version extended, so maybe this one will be internally focusing.
I agree I don't know where it fits? Like you said you can crop with the 85GM or use your 100 STF so what does it accomplish other than if you really like that focal length. When Sony ups the MP which you can almost bet on in the next two years it becomes even less of a viable addition.
I have a lot of lenses but if I am going to add one it will be something that allows me to do something I cannot do now like a Canon 17mm T/S or 200-600GM if they make it and the rumored 135 Sony.
