If it’s not a native FE Mount than no interest from me. I’m done with adapters.

Sigma will launch a new 105mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art for Sony E-mount. "
Yea than it went on to say which throws the curve ball
t. This lens will be also available for Canon and Nikon which means the lens is likely not designed for Sony only. Or maybe Sigma will announce two differently designed version of this lens?
SAR is reporting that Sigma will announce a 105/1.4 Art. It seems like the details aren't necessarily clear regarding a mirrorless mount.
I think it’s just that at this focal length there’s no real difference in optical design.
And performance with live view matters a lot for DSLRs these day so the designs have to optimized for OCPDAF
So it’s easy to make them for FE, EF and F
Now maybe a nice setup would be 55 /105 and eliminate the 85 in your bag. Not sure for me it replaces my Batis 135 which would be really hard to pry from my death grip on it. Now if there was a 200 2.8 in place than it would make sense for me. Not sure why they have not figured out a 200 2.8 yet. Use to be a very popular lens in Canon for instance. Somebody needs to make one

Start the countdown for the Guy musical lens game:
1. This lens is forever.
2. This other lens would have to pry the first lens from my deathgrip.
3. I'm done, my kit is done.
4. Wellllllll, if I switch this for that, and that for this, this, and this, it could work....but no.
5. No, no, I'm good. Wife would kill me. Settled.
6. My best copy forever lens is on the B/S forum, grab it fast guys!
7. And I've re-jiggered EVERYTHING in my kit. My kit is now complete.
8. Rinse, repeat, and turn on the infinity cycle.

Guy I think at 105mm there’s no real advantage to having the back elements right back, in either size or quality. And internally, the DSLR people need a focussing system that’s good for live view with OSPDF, so that means that there’s really no difference between a mirrorless and a dslr design for a fast 105.
So SIgma can make the same optical design in Sony, Canon and Nikon mounts with no compromise.
Of course it will be huge, but that’s because it’s a 1.4`/105! I’m tempted, but I would never travel with it...

Interesting comment. I believe the Samyang 135/2 might fit that description and we all know how well that lens performs on mirrorless. I am, however hopeful Sigma took the last two years ( like the Sigma CEO said they would) to design true Emount lenses for the FE system. If they can reuse DSLR designs at some focal lengths, that just means more high IQ mirrorless lenses sooner

Yes that’s right. The designs for wideangles, and indeed normals, need to be quite different and I’m sure that’s what they will do...Well I hope it is!

I actually thought about your posts where you mentioned adapting the Nikkor to your A9/A7r3 when I first read the Sigma 104 mirrorless rumor. I really like the look of the Nikkor 105/1.4 but just couldn't bring myself to use yet another adapter I would for sure try the Sigma version too fully expecting a tank sized lens, but at this point seems they are all going large, even Leica SL lenses.

If it’s that big I want a 200 f2 instead. Lost interest. Now the 70 macro looks interesting but want to know size and weight and it can keep up against the CV 65
That photo seems to show the lens with a removable hood, so the actual lens size is (perhaps) less gigantic than it first appears. Also, the mount seems to have some parts protruding from the rear, which none of my e-mount lenses have. Do Canon or Nikon mounts have those little protrusions?
