Thanks. Road Atlanta was a fun place to try. Keep in mind I don't have any other place to compare it to, but I was able to drive to several vantage places around the track and get right up to / shoot over the fence. Was a good place to try it out at.

Smoovie, hope you don't mind me butting in...I know everyone is probably tired of this but I'm carrying the flag for Sigma on macro lenses. We have both a 150 and a 70 and both are really sharp.
That isn't a knock on the 135 - I want one too, but I love the macro capabilities of my 150...

Great! I'll keep that in mind because soon I will be buying one. The husband just got news yesterday of a lovely 10% raise so you know I am itching to spend it

Speaking of shooting trains, drinking beer and eating a pizza... i just heard of a rail yard north of acworth that has a ton of train traffic. Maybe six trains an hour. It wouldn't take long to fill up a card or two. Just a suggestion for a place to shoot - don't know if pizza is legal in that part of the state though - but it is up towards Mark's place!
I think I know where you are talking about. I live in Kennesaw, between Kennesaw and Acworth actually. There are trains going through often but I don't know what the actual schedule is. There is a good restaurant in Acworth called Henry's Louisianna Grill and one in Kennesaw called The Trackside Grill and it is literally right next to the train tracks.
Hey Stacy....I too think macro would be fun. Talk to JB, Craig or Mark A about it...I think they shoot it all the time.
I have heard great things about the 100 2.8 Canon macro....the 60 MM EFS (you can't use this one though eh? 5D?) and the 150 that Mark is talking about.
I think Craig uses a 3rd party lens that he loves....his work is awesome....

I personally don't think there is a "portriat" lens...well other than the lens I happen to have on my camera....I always seem to make "it" work.
It is fun breaking the rules....

I agree. As far as I can tell, there really aren't "rules" in photography, or not any that have to be followed. It's not like engineering or medicine or law where some things have to be just so. It's an art form and completely open to personal taste, which is why it appeals to me I think. I do so much detailed and logical work in my job that I like to just do what I want when taking pictures, ya know? Now I am always open to ideas about how to achieve certain things, etc. But in the end, I get to choose what lens I'll use and what I'll use it for, which is why photography is fun
I have the 100 2.8 and its a great lens the whole 2 times I've found myself needing macro. I just don't find myself thinking in that mindset enough though to have justified the purchase yet. Need to get out and use it more.
I love doing these photo strolls. When I get back I look at everyones pics and I see pics of little details.....and I think...next time I am going to pay more attention in that area.....and I don't.....I don't think in that mindset (I love this saying!)....
Funny how we want to try things but when we get in the heat of the battle it all goes out the window....

Jon, a wide angle bends things a little that a true 50 won't. So its a compromise at best and distorts faces a bit more than most subjects like. I'm not arguing with your right to break the rules or your choice in which lens to use.
I'm just stating many years of conventional wisdom by photographers from ... everywhere - with more experience and knowledge than you and me put together. It seems to prove a point - you're bucking them and throwing it in my face. Man - i don't need this. I ain't gonna suck up and be nice just cause you are showing some attitude. You said it - to each his own. Do it your way - its really Ok by me - its none of my business. You're doing fine all on your own. I have said i like your results - what more do you want? For me to kiss the ground you walk on? It ain't happening my friend. None of us here in FMville is that good....Show more →
My goodness....settle down! I don't think he was giving you attitude, at least I didn't hear any attitude in his posts. He's just disagreeing, respectfully. I did too (I think, I hope). I don't mean to buck anyone with years of experience, but I have my own feelings about how I want to do things too, know what I mean? It's all good, right?
smoov - the argument was over... Let it die so we can all get back to taking photos without having to read half-page long posts. Seriously, have fun with the 10% raise. I'm itching to buy some new toys myself - I'm finally working for the summer and paying rent with my salary instead of photo money is great because I can finally afford some stuff
Next up is an editing computer and mass storage device. Can anyone suggest their favorite storage methods? I'm thinking some setup of affordable external drives set up as a RAID that's compatible with my Apple.

I can't wait to try shooting at Road Atlanta....
I shot some motorcycles there some time back, it was so much fun. And, they let you bring your own bike and you can do a trip around the race course before the race starts, whoo hooo!!!! I also got a great shot of a mullet at the race.....

Dude....sorry....I don't read every day! Is there a time limit on when you can reply to stuff ? I reply as I go along, I don't read everything and then go back and reply, which maybe I should from now on. Sorry for bringing it up either way.
I use a Western Digital My Book for back up storage. It's 500GB and it's very easy to use and very portable as well.
Me on the bike I used to have. We rode it to Road Atlanta for the AMA Suzuki Superbike race in 2006. They do that race every year in September if anyone is interested to going!
