Jon, a wide angle bends things a little that a true 50 won't. So its a compromise at best and distorts faces a bit more than most subjects like. I'm not arguing with your right to break the rules or your choice in which lens to use.
I'm just stating many years of conventional wisdom by photographers from ... everywhere - with more experience and knowledge than you and me put together. It seems to prove a point - you're bucking them and throwing it in my face. Man - i don't need this. I ain't gonna suck up and be nice just cause you are showing some attitude. You said it - to each his own. Do it your way - its really Ok by me - its none of my business. You're doing fine all on your own. I have said i like your results - what more do you want? For me to kiss the ground you walk on? It ain't happening my friend. None of us here in FMville is that good....Show more →
Hmmm...once again you have left me speachless. I make a simple post stating I was very happy that Tracey met me to give me my new 135 L...and I get a bunch of lens theory and how the 135 on a crop body can't possibly work.....plus I am asked to prove it. So...I write a nice long post but delete it thinking...welll JB is just in a mode....so I blow it off....then I get more rambling about theory and what the greats of the past do.....so I play along and I get labeled as attitude?
I think you seriously need to reread what you write to people. It is coming off as pompous and arrogant. A lot of your posts as of late have been this way. I really started wondering what was up with you when ripped that guy on POTN a new one because he simply wanted to start and Atlanta only forum....
Asking you to kiss my feet? Hmmmmm...I don't think so. Everytime I post something about a new toy I feel like Albert Brooks in the movie Defending your life.
JB - I like you as a friend...but I am starting to worry about you and some of your posts.....enough said.

Mark - I totally agree about switching up systems. It is way to costly for me. I can play around in the 1200 - 1500 range then the purse strings tighten up. Of course I usually have to sell something to get the new toy. It is all in good fun. Of course if I was making a living of this I wouldn't be able to do this.
It sure is nice to see the new toys. The screen on the D300 is amazing as are the pics from what I can tell. Nice camera.
JU, I had that exact same problem one time. Let me think about this for a minute and see if I can remember what I found. It was a couple of years ago
From what I can remember, it was either that I had the slave on the wrong group or I was shorting in the metal shoe I was using to mount the flash on the light stand. I think I found both. I put some tape under the contacts and reset all of my settings and everything was fine.
I've never shot with any canon flash in manual, much less 2 flashes that I wanted to communicate. Should be fun.

sheesh... walking away with hands in the air... i figured you might could learn something here. evidently you prefer to twist and read into my posts what you wish. thats fine. maybe filling you in on a few blanks is a mistake - where i come from. that's a learning opportunity.
as to the idiot on potn -well, i don't mind anyone re-inventing the wheel. while he is busy doing that, i'm gonna drive away on the one that brung me... to each his own
the hard thing about reality is that there really are absolutes. its not nearly as relative as some would want. sometime opinions are backed up by years of facts - and if that bumps someone in the head and hurts their feelings - too bad. that's reality. sorry top be the bearer of bad news - i can't candy coat it for you any better than that.
for the record - i said the 135 was a tad long. i did not say anything about your purchase or the way that you use it - in fact i was complimentary as to how you squeeze out great images in spite of the limitations. never said it wasn't going to work - said you will learn it will be difficult maybe - but not as you stated.
i also said the 35 is equivalent to a 50 with a slight warp - just a fact.
if that is opinionated to you or pompous or arrogant - then so be it - that is your spin. i can't fix your bruises - nor have i inflicted any. you've done that to yourself.

JB you damn sure know I am all for learning. Go back and read what you wrote. Then if you don't agree well...I don't know what to tell you. There are time and places to lend one's knowledge. There is also a way to do it so one doesn't apear to be on a soap box...ALL THE TIME!

This my friend sums up my whole point very nicely for me. Who are you to say this man is an idiot for wanting to spend his time how he see's fit? Insert pompous and arrogant attitude here sir.
JB - I value you as a friend and will not continue this conversation in this forum. Needless to say we have said our piece. If you wish to continue this conversation call me or PM me. I hope you do not take this as a personal attack because it isn't meant to be so. You had your say and I had mine. I hope you still plan on coming out to shoot this weekend because I enjoy your company. There can be no confusion when people are face to face...
Typical - you wish to end the conversation when you think the final word has been said.
I went back and read the whole thing from before you posted your purchase. Not once was there a personal attack against you. yet with every one of your responses, you made a smart ass comment back. Even to the point of calling me - or anyone who owns a100-400 "silly". Its an offhand technique used in juvenile debates in high school when not much else can be said - but I let it pass... out of respect for the forum as much as for you.
I always finished off my comments of fact - with a complimentary statement of your technique - to show it is nothing personal. It is just the facts.
you up the anti by questioning my mental acuity - and I'm thinking - where is this anger coming from? what has his panties in a wad? I assume it must be since i mentioned the embarrassing, insensitive and unapologetic "African wombat" comment you made a while back at a shoot we did together. Man - i'm sorry you stuck your foot in your mouth. But please don't blame me for your inner guilt.
As for the guy on POTN - i personally took offense to his attitude and arrogance and willingness to use someone else's resources and platform to promote his own competing platform. Plus i thought it a waste of time. I don't know if he ever got it off the ground or generated any interest - if he did - good for him. If he didn't - it was a stupid waste of everyone's time - including his own. For the record - an idiot is merely one who spends his time and effort in a pointless endeavor. If the shoe fits... he should wear it proudly - its all he has got.
in summary - as to you - if you don't like statements of fact or of well known conventions - don't take it out on me with snide quips and virtually slanderous judgments of my mental state. try to appreciate the fact that I recognize your talent in spite of your efforts to buck the trend.
But don't ever think or expect me to back down - not on something I've done most of my 52 years. you always have the option to run me off - then you have the option of either learning from the school of hard knocks or someone who isn't as kind as I have already been.
Now I've said enough to last the week. and I think i'll find something else to shoot this weekend. there is no need in continuing this.
Grant - Those pics are awesome! I can't imagine taking a trip like that. It must be both challenging and exciting. I'll bet you could write a book based off your trips....
JU: When you were getting the delay in the flashes was it when you were pressing the back button and "test firing" the flashes? Because when test firing the canon remote system fires by group, A pause, B pause, C group.
Hi guys...I figured everyone here was sick of hearing about my new stuff, so I posted my pictures from today in the sports corner. I got to shoot a couple of lacrosse games this evening and was really looking forward to seeing how my new stuff would handle it. I was really pleased.
Well, I got out and shot some for fun this weekend for a change. To start off, on Friday a group went with some people in bridal gowns to Piedmont Park
On Sunday, I went out and shot some cars at Race Atlanta. That was quite an experience - up till now I had never shot at anything moving faster than a bicycle. Was definitely a learning experience, but fun none-the-less.
