Well the A7RIII is resolving the contacts the best then
I'm actally surprised these contacts don't have much better and natural looking iris. Using such stuff on models could potentially goof a pro shoot, I would guess.

I’m wondering if it’s worth keeping my A7rii as a backup rather than selling it. On one hand, used sale prices are very low due to the inventory glut and I wouldn’t have to rent an extra A7riii backup for trips. On the other hand, I’d have to carry a slew of extra old batteries with me and getting some money for my A7rii is better than nothing.

Its a great question. I hated having two camera systems with different batteries. This is not so bad since its still Sony but it would drive me nuts. I thought about keeping the A9 and just getting a A7rII as backup but different batteries different menu systems too. Make me crazy, Half there already and don't need the push.

Not only that, you also need to bring 2.5 old batteries (or a grip) to match one of the new batteries. So I’d need to bring 7+ old batteries to match the capacity of 3 new ones.

More on the .ARQ file format from Dpreview - slide 9: The Sony system shoots four uncompressed Raws, which must be later processed in Sony's "Imaging Edge" software to combine them into a .ARQ file, which can then be adjusted. Both Olympus and Pentax do this in-camera.
I hope that this .ARQ file made in the "Imaging Edge" software really is raw, and that it will be supported by LR and C1.

Question: I remember reading that A7R has a higher viewfinder zoom magnification (14.4) than A7RM2. Does anybody knows, what is this value for the Mark III?
Also interested in this. One of the things that kept me from buying the RII was the reduction in magnification making critical focus checks harder. Maybe the better EVF will make it a moot point, but I really hope this is fixed to be more like the OG R, which I think "snaps" focus at 7.2x very well.

I think I posted this earlier and it was 13.8
Yes, with the A7RII the mag. is 12.5x but I don't recall the A7R maximum magnification.
I remember when first getting my A7RII that the viewfinder image IQ seemed to be a downgrade form the A7R's. There was a question of standard or high display quality but it really didn't make much of a difference.

If anything I would say this camera is a bit of a downgrade for landscapes with the loss of most of the play memories apps.
As to the AF toggle, kind of maddening that this is an "upgrade feature". I'm sure it could be changed in software in about 30 seconds by the devs.
I agree with you that as a landscape shooter, the upgrade wouldn't make much sense for the extra money over the A7R2. Landscapers who don't have a body with larger files will be having a field day (sorry for the pun) snapping up low priced A7R2's. This will be quite a win for them.
Side Bar: I admire landscape shooters, who, in my mind, are a separate breed of shooters. The lengths you guys go to in order to get the perfect scenes in the perfect light at the perfect time of day or month or year on top of framing the compositions - it's really an art form.

Hi Fred,
The A7r magnified max magnification view is 14.4X with the lower mag view of 7.2X.

Man, I really look forward to read some impressions on how fast the AF is. That will decide whether this is a must have or nice to have upgrade for me. The 2x AF speed marketing talk really means nothing.

The A7r is 14.4x. Here's a comparison video I did a few years ago:

I had the original 400mm f/4 DO lens and loved it. It was a game changer for me and I switched from Nikon to be able to use this lens, and it was my first Canon lens purchase. I went on to Nikon again an really missed the lens. All of my Nikon gear is now sold and I'm a Sony shooter. Now it appears you are using the new on on Sony. If you could answer a few questions about using the new DOII on Sony bodies I would appreciate it.
What converter are you using? And which Sony body?
What features convert? Autofocus? Exposure? EXIF Info? and others?
Any image degradation?
Is it worth it to buy a Canon 400mm f/4 DO II lens for use on a Sony?

Now that the 3 is out with same resolution as 2, I am wondering why someone who shoots MF lenses like CV or Loxi, will want to upgrade?
Guess that depends on whether pixel shift is a good feature and whether the other marketing hype regarding dynamic range and clarity and color are just marketing hype.

I think selling the A7R2 sooner than later would be better. If it's your only camera, that may not be an option - but it's still selling pretty strongly right now.
