Battery life, fps, dual cards, better EVF, more responsive

For some, like landscapers or even some portrait artists, I can't see upgrading. It's the speediness that some other types of photographers need that will make the upgrade worth it.

For studio work, I always use manual focus anyway. It's shooting on location in dark places that you need wide open focusing. Do their lenses have that much of an issue with focus changing when stopped down I was getting ready to order two new Sony lenses for my new A7R3 but things like this make me hesitate.
I have not noticed issues with stopped down focus shift with adapted Canon glass (the 70-200 f2.8 L II primarily), though AF focus speed and hunting still remains an issue even after the firmware update. I don't know if this is the case with native glass as well, as I sold all of my native lenses. I think this is perhaps a case where Sony "fixed" a problem that no one was asking them to fix, like the star eater issue.

No we asked believe me . . Certain lenses like the GM 85 the 50 1.4 used stoppeddown to working aperture and in studio it would have a serious problem focusing . I sold my 85 mm because of this. I bought the 85 1.8 instead which does not do that. They have upgraded the firmware. So yes big issue and a fix

I think selling the A7R2 sooner than later would be better. If it's your only camera, that may not be an option - but it's still selling pretty strongly right now.
Unfortunately it’s my only camera right now...so I’d have to wait until the new one arrives to put it on the market.

Sony didn't update the firmware to fix issues with third party lenses. Why would they?
Smart adapters like Metabones and MC-11 always kept the lens iris fully open for focus acquisition anyways.
The fix was direct to native lenses that focused at working apertures (Lots of lenses including most GM and some ZA models). There were complains/requests for Sony to provide an option to allow lenses to focus at wider apertures regardless of working aperture and potential focus shift issues...After a while, they updated the Setting Effect "On" and "Off" to include the new aperture functionality.
So, for affected lenses, the setting "On" allows the lens to "focus" at working aperture (just like before) and setting "Off" keeps the iris open wide (usually f/2) regardless of working aperture.

In theory the Sony native lenses should behave similarly to adapted lenses with the latest firmware update, and even in decent light I'm still having issues with af speed and acquisition stopped down to f5.6-8. I've given it a few tries but I always throw it back in the bag and use my dslr for client work in a studio.
Until I'm confident that Sony has figured out how to do this, in my opinion I don't think the Sony mirrorless cams are ready for prime time for professionals that shoot in a studio situation a lot. I'd love to be proven wrong with the A7r3 though. I also wonder how well the A9 and A7riii are coping with event flash photography not having a grid-type af beam. The A7rii is dismal in my experience even shooting wide open at f2.8 on the gm 24-70.

Did you set Setting Effect to "off" ?
Yeah, I've tried pretty much every trick (setting effect, IR beam on/off, different focus zones/sizes, continuous vs single shot, stabilization on/off, etc.) I've started to use strobes with stronger modeling lights as well which has had no affect. I still get about an 80% in focus rate in studio situations with the a7rii, whereas I'm closer to 95% with the 5dm4. A lot of times, especially for advertising shoots where I have a huge shot list to go through, or executive portraits where I'm given 5-10 mins max with a person, it really starts to stress you out.
The thing that put the final nail in the coffin to switch back to Canon for my pro kit was when I was shooting a CEO of an ad agency for WSJ, and in his pretty well lit home in SF (huge bay windows midday facing north), I missed a ton of great reaction shots of him laughing because the GM 70-200 f2.8 wouldn't acquire focus fast enough in AF-S, and AF-C wasn't usable. To clarify, this was shooting at f6.3 1/250 iso 100. I still like my a7rii for personal work and travel, which is why I got another one (though I'll likely sell it soon because of the a7r3 appeals to me more) but I got tired of beta testing it for work.

I can't imagine that Sony's post processing software wouldn't be compatible with Sony's latest camera, but I guess if anyone was potentially capable of screwing that up it would be Sony.

...and Nikon.
Seriously, Phaseone, who makes Capture 1, is an independent company located in Denmark. There's no chance they won't support the A7r3 or other new models from Sony, Nikon et al.

Total noob question - but thinking of switching systems.
The DR, ISO and silent high frame shooting have me drooling.
Two quick questions:
1) Is this going to have follow focusing internally? So you can lock on a face and it will continue to follow as camera moves?
2) will it be able to be linked to an iphone or similar through bluetooth to allow control of shooting and focus externally?
If you use a native lens, yes, it can not only follow the face but also the eye, which is more critical than the face. You can get the Eye-AF also using Canon lenses with Metabones IV or V or similar but the performance is not as fluid as a native lens. The adapter, Metabones, in this case is the bottleneck in the AF process but they are updating the FW of their adapter on a regular basis.
Taking one step further on the A9, Leica-M lenses, which are 100% manual focus lenses, can be used on an AF adapter and you can even get Eye-AF with that camera. There is at least one adapter that is readily available from TechArt, called TechArt Pro. And Fotodiox has announced a similar adapter but I am not familiar with that. I assume that the A7r III has a similar AF system as the A9 but how it performs remains to be seen.
Remove/control shooting via bluetooth on your phone can be done with through an application offered by Sony Playmemories. It works with all A7 series camera up to this point. The status of the apps offered through Playmemories is questionable at this point, but the way we understand it at this point, the apps are not available for the A7r III and A9. Maybe some kind of replacement is at work. Who knows.

As far as I know, only the 'apps' won't be supported. PlayMemories Mobile will still be supported. (Send to Smartphone and Ctrl w/ Smartphone options)
It would be very useful if they added a intervalometer for their 'ctrl w/ smartphone' code.

For now it seems there is a clear difference. The A9 can drive combos that all the way to f/11, (such as the 100-400 with the 2X TC), whereas the A7r II could only drive combos to f/8. I haven't heard about the A7r III yet, but I am guessing it will be f/8 too. That will leave a somewhat similar situation to Canikon where the a9 is clearly better with TCs than the A7r III.
Thanks for the clarification, Steve. That sounds like a good guess. For me, the 1.4x TC is more important than the 2x TC, so that's no deal breaker.
