p.7 #1 · Pre-order Now! Sony FE 16-35/2.8 GM and FE 12-24/4 G

DPR has a sample gallery for the 12-24. Looks pretty lackluster to me:

16-35/2.8 looks better, but I have no interest in that lens:

Good for Sony.
These two lenses clearly fill the needs of many A7x/A9 users who are used to such lenses being available on their DSLR system. Though way to large for my usual needs, I still sometimes need a 16-35/2.8 for technical work and this would be attractive for that (still have my excellent 17-35/2.8D AFS Nikkor, but I'm getting out of the Nikon world slowly but surely).

Now I'd really be interested in a 300mm/4, 400mm/4 and 600mm/4 telephotos

Those telephoto options are coming.
But, you'll need a new body with updated AF to focus them worth a damn.
And, those new bodies are coming, too...

$ony has you covered.

There really isn't a high quality standard zoom for APS-C -- at least not one worthy of Sony's great sensors. I really hope the 16-35GM performs well across the range so it can be moonlight in that role.

I travel with a few lenses and an a6300 (most commonly coupled to the 10-18mm) and an a7rii (which usually has the 24-70GM on it). If the new 16-35 doesn't have substantially weak focal lengths I could use it as a standard zoom on the a6300 (until I needed it to shoot wide on the a7rii) and leave the 24-70GM at home. That would let me shoot primes on the a7rii with less downside since the a6300 would be at the ready if I suddenly needed a normal focal length.

"I have a dream... "

My suspicion, however, is that since the 24-70GM and the 70-200GM both seem to be strongest on the wide end, that the 16-35GM will similarly favor focal lengths wider than 24.

I would say most likely the 16-35 will be better on the wide end. Which really is a good idea as many shooters especially in the 35 range may want a 35 prime. Where we need this to be good though is 28mm since we really have nothing outstanding to pick from.

Maybe I've been at this too long. But it's really simple logic. When it comes to pricing every OEM compares to other brands. These are the baselines you look at as a company, than figure out your profit margin. It's like a restaurant food is usually a 28 percent profit and alcohol is 300 percent. These are the baselines to run a profitable business.

I charge as much as the market will bear. A day rate fee covers many things like insurance, rent utilities , rentals , repairs , gear and the list goes on.

My wife's shoes.

Okay going back to GM lenses since it was brought up here in the thread about the costs. GM lenses use a very expensive lens polishing machine that reduces these very very small lines in the glass from the molding machines when they make glass. This reduces the onion ring effect on aspherical lens elements. I don't know all the science behind it but I have seen the machines in the Leica factory in Germany. Very big and very cool looking machines polishing the elements. Also very very expensive to purchase. Those costs and time on these machines are obviously being passed on to the end user as they should. So this is why the 16-35 GM is part of the reason for costs and also there trying to make the best lenses and design without lens aberrations. We are going to pay for that

I just don't see any reasons that made a 12-24/4 costs $1,700 while Sony Zeiss 16-35/4 costs $1250 (current price on BH). I will get Sony Zeiss 16-35 if I need a f/4 wide angle zoom, or go with 16-35/2.8.

Because making a lens with extreme focal lengths like 12 is much more expensive and difficult than 16; at the wide angle end 4mm difference is a lot.

I'm really liking the sounds of a native 12-24, but my concern is sun star rendition.

Couldn't care less about the 16-35.

DPR has some samples which show you the sunstars on the 12-24; OK but not great was my reaction, but sunstars are a matter of taste...

Would the 12-24 be a good lens for real estate interior photography? Or is 12mm just way too wide and stretched?

I'd love if the 16-35/4 drops because of this. Good news for those of us that rely on used gear, too (although the 12-24 has me excited).

Not fussed if they are good, but may go Sigma or stick with Nikon if they were bad.
I know Sony like rounded iris blades and that's cool for some FL's, but not ultra wides imo.

My sense was no worse than Sigma, but not like Loxia (but I just have a thing for straight ten baded irises)

It's hard to compare, but I think the MTF graphs appear to show the 12-24 to be a better performer than the 16-35 f4 lens. We won't know until some real tests come out, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is a step up considering the price, the elimination of the longer end of the range, and the G designation.

If the lens is a step up compared to the 16-35 in the overlap range, it will be a real compelling lens to consider. Te largest drawback that I see is the lack of a filter accommodation. Someone will make a Lee or Hitech adapter for it probably, but it'll require the 150mm filters for certain, as I think the outside diameter of the lens is 87mm.

That lack of filter may be the one thing that will hold me back.

It'd be a good choice, however, 16mm on full frame is the sweet spot imo. 16mm - 21mm is where you'd probably be at most of the time. I'd go for the 16-35 GM instead.

The extra 12 to 16mm is definitely welcome to have when shooting real estate, although much of the time you'll be able to take a step or two back. The example above, of an exterior shot, I fail to understand why 16mm wouldn't be enough.

In the end, it will depend on your style or shooting. I'm moving more and more away from the wide angle side and most of my clients are enjoying that change. I still have some though that, unfortunately, simply want to make a small room look like a palace.

If you're shooting boring properties with no to very little interior design put into it, the wider you'll tend to go. Luckily for me, that's rarely the case here in Stockholm.

One word solution (ok maybe two words), WonderPana
I have their system on a Tamron 15-30mm and it never comes off.
If Sony sells enough they'll make one for the FE12-24mm.

Those look like excellent additions. The 16-35mm f/2.8 is obviously something Sony just had to have in their lens lineup, no questions asked.

At first I didn't think it would make much sense for me, having the FE 16-35mm f/4 already, but we all know how that lens isn't exactly a world beater a 35 mm wide open, so the GM could be quite a bit more versatile if it delivers the goods at 35 mm and wide open at f/2.8. It is not only about a stop here, good sharpness and beautiful bokeh at 35 mm f/2.8 could be something very nice indeed.

The 12-24 is interesting to me but the filter issue gives me pause. The 16-35 needs to be a heck of a lot better than the Zony 16-35 f4 stopped down for me to sell the Zony and buy the GM.

The 12-24 June 10th. The 16-35 August 10th. August is a ways out.

I'm looking at both these lenses and I think a good thought pattern on purchasing is most of us have a prime or two we really like. See the 12-24 kind of leans toward the person that loves a 35mm prime and the 16-35 tends to benefit the 50mm prime shooter and you can even squeeze in a 12 prime

So one possibility is

12-24,35,85,135

Or

12,16-35,50,85,135

I'm also thinking Sony has been known for putting the good end of the zoom on the wider side.

Just some thoughts

It is interesting to look at the camerasize comparison (16-35 zony / 12-24 G / 16-35GM / 24-70GM). I think they did a great job on the size.
