p.6 #1 · Pre-order Now! Sony FE 16-35/2.8 GM and FE 12-24/4 G

The !2-24 is a great surprise! I was actually thinking of ordering the Canon lens today. Glad I waited. Really looking forward to test results on this lens. A native Sony 12-24 would be really nice as long as it's performance is up to at least the Sigma, if not the Canon.

It's interesting that Sony went on to complete the holy trinity in both F2.8 and F4 before anything else.

Just placed my order for the 12-24mm at my local shop. No ETA for shipping atm though.

The size of 16-35/2.8 is quite a lot smaller than 16-35/2.8 ZA which is very fine UWA btw. That is by looking at the 16-35/4 next to it. So, 16-35/2.8 GM seems to have some form of mirrorless advantage. MTF graphs look superb for a wide angle offering although they are missing 40 line pairs / mm compared to Zeiss MTF measurements.

Now, waiting for battle against 18mm Batis, 21mm Loxia and 25mm Batis. That will settle the score.

I think both are overpriced, especially 12-24. That 12-24, non-GM and f4 should be around $1,000 IMHO.

Maybe the reason is that it's "only" F4.

This interview on Imaging Resource with a Sony (senior technology manager) guy is interesting.

One of the most interesting things for me (At minute 21:45) he is asked (from a marketing perspective) why the 12-24 ins't a G-Master lens. The Sony guy swallows hard and hems and haws a bit (artfully though) and my interpretation is that it could have been. Marketing has their hands all over these releases and not always in as coherent a way as it should.

For example. For me I would have liked to have seen more than 7 blades in the aperture of

Why do you think the Sony 12-24 f4 should be $1,000 when the Sigma 12-24 f4 is $1600 and the Canon 11-24 f4 is $2700...and both the Sigma and Canon is almost twice the weight of the Sony.

So you think a Sony G 12-24 f4 should sell for two thirds of the cost of the $1500 Sigma Art 12-24 f4 which is twice the weight?

Well, Sigma 12-24/4 has high IQ except for a focus shift problem. If 12-24/4G matches Sigma's performance and without focus shift the price is just fine.

So let me get this straight . You sell a product for your little company at 12 dollars for a bolgona sandwich with American cheese and another sandwich shop is selling the same sandwich for 15.95 and your missing a extra net profit of 3.95 are you going to raise your price or have the bank that's holding the note on your property eat you alive from lost revenue. Sony is in business to make money and more importantly gain market share for there investors why discount a product a competitor is charging more for. You won't have investors for long.

p.6 #10 · Pre-order Now! Sony FE 16-35/2.8 GM and FE 12-24/4 G

I didn't see the 12-24G coming. So that was the surprise lens design Andrea was referring to earlier. I like Sony's approach of announcing lenses in (slightly) different price groups in pairs these days.

Already having the 24-70 GM, the Loxia 21 and the Samyang 14 SP, I don't see myself getting another UWA any time soon.

So, where do we go from here? Zoom-wise, the under-100mm range is now pretty well covered with f2.8 and f4 zooms and beyond 100mm we don't exactly have a shortage of zooms either (70-200 2.8/4, 70-300, 100-400).

That leaves the high-performing, compact 35 2 everybody wants (which in Sony's eyes apparently means you should buy the RX1 series), and what? A fast 21/24 GM and longer glass? Andrea at SAR said the 135mm and 400mm FE lens would be announced later this year.

There could be a number of reasons we could tick off... max aperture, bokeh character, MTF prowess, abberations control, flare control... my point is only that here's basically a marketing guy who is hard pressed to explain why one is a G Master lens and one is not. Heck, the 100 STM 2.8 isn't particularly fast and is a GMaster lens. It's more an observation.

I for one am excited to see more about how the lenses perform. Early reports are that the 16-35 is sharp in the corners. The form factor and range of the 12-24 is quite appealing too.

Zooms are a luxury in my bag. I don't really need them, but like to have them to make things easy depending on the assignment or circumstance.

Good for Sony.
These two lenses clearly fill the needs of many A7x/A9 users who are used to such lenses being available on their DSLR system. Though way to large for my usual needs, I still sometimes need a 16-35/2.8 for technical work and this would be attractive for that (still have my excellent 17-35/2.8D AFS Nikkor, but I'm getting out of the Nikon world slowly but surely).

Now I'd really be interested in a 300mm/4, 400mm/4 and 600mm/4 telephotos

I would like to think it is indeed mostly the second possibility. However, I could see that we may be dealing with more pronounced distortion characteristics and vignetting that will have to be addressed digitally in the lens profile. I hope I am wrong though but that FL range in a small and lightweight package.... hm.

'12-24mm lens weights (sic) half compared to the Sigma 12-24mm and Canon 11-24mm'
The very fact the new lens is being compared to the illustrious competition suggests they feel it performs at that level. Time will tell. BH's page reports 'no filter thread', 565 grams for the 12-24mm.

At 680 grams, the 'light' new f2.8 zoom is still heavier than the Batis 25mm and Batis 18mm combined, and takes pricey and huge 82mm filters and loses a stop (and therefore versatility) over the very street/travel worthy 25mm. Still has the giant front element too, so everyone will see you coming (Batis 25mm uses 67mm).

Very different user groups; f2.8 zooms are 'pro trinity', Zeiss is enthusiast niche.

Low hanging fruit, but considering the 16-35 f4 is pretty darn good, the 12-24 was totally unexpected.

Actually I don't care much about Sigma, Tamron or anything else. I didn't know they exist. Spend $1500 for that Sigma and add an adaptor on? No, thanks.
I just don't see any reasons that made a 12-24/4 costs $1,700 while Sony Zeiss 16-35/4 costs $1250 (current price on BH). I will get Sony Zeiss 16-35 if I need a f/4 wide angle zoom, or go with 16-35/2.8.

Well just buy what you need then. The 12-24 seems to not be the lens for you

Both lenses look very interesting.

Though, a personal quandry/question:

Is anyone else like me in that they buy decent zooms that cover a very usable FL (16-35 and 24-70GM, for example) and almost never use them?

The sigma is an ART series lens, right? IE their highest lens line with the best IQ they make and no compromises? Sony has a line like that too and they call it GMaster, which the 12-24 is not. The 12-24 falls into their next class down, the solid IQ with some compromises line of G Fe lenses.
