Sony Goes Wide with FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM and 12-24mm f/4 G Lenses (Available for Pre-order on Friday)
Sony is going wide with today’s announcement of the FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM and FE 12-24mm f/4 G for full-frame E-mount cameras. The new GM ultra wide completes the f/2.8 "pro trinity", when paired with the 24-70mm and 70-200mm lenses. However, the 12-24mm offers a great ultra-wide perspective with its ability to reach all the way down to just 12mm.
The FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM provides extreme resolution and smooth bokeh. It manages to incorporate two extreme aspherical (XA), three aspherical, and two extra-low dispersion elements. Combine this with the fast and constant f/2.8 aperture and the eleven-bladed diaphragm, and you have the high sharpness and creamy bokeh that the G Master series promises. The FE 12-24mm seem to be optimized for resolution with four aspherical elements, one Super ED element, and three ED elements. The short flange distance of the A7 series, the lens design was able to stay compact and lightweight at this ultra-wide range.

16-35 GM sounds really interesting. The idea was interesting a year ago, the need was there. There shall be epic battle between the best primes against this zoom from pure IQ point of view. Sony will be stepping on Zeiss' toes with full force.

I'll take that 12-24 if it is small.
So you won't be taking it, then!
Can't see that it could be much smaller than the Sigma with the same specs that weighs 1.14kg! Maybe the mirrorless advantage for wides mupight shave of a couple of hundred grams...

SAR says it will be smaller than the Sigma 12-24/4. We'll see soon I hope!
Added, paste from SAR: "2) And a 12-24mm f/4.0 FE lens will be announced too (Source: Chiphell.). It will be more “affordable” than the GM. A good news is that I have been told this lens has half the size of the Sigma 12-24mm lens!"

It will be interesting for me if it could mount filters... but being a 12-24 I highly doubt it (not interested into buying those crazy filters bigger than 100x150mm)... I will go to the 16-35 then...

Manual focusing functionality will be an important one with 16-35. Wide angle shots may also have static objects So, there should not be much, if any, focus shift with this one.

Count me in as interested in the 12-24 assuming it's not a ton of cash and/or huge.
Still wouldn't sell my Batis 18 due to size/weight/IQ, but I feel like a 12-24 would still get use. I used to love my 8-15L fisheye for fun shots, and all I'm left with now is the 16mm fisheye converter for my 28mm f/2, which could probably go as well since I now have a Zeiss 35mm f/2.8.

the 16-35 makes a strong case for me to dump my Sigma 18-35, and 28FE/21mm adapter, depending on how much it costs...$2200 for the 16-35, $1698 for the 12-24.
Might need to copy and paste the whole link for it to work.
The Sony FE 12-24mm f/4 G will be available this July for $1,700 (about £1,320, AU$2,290) while the FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM is set to release at the end of August and will retail for $2,200 (about £1,700, AU$2,970).
The 12-24 looks small! I was debating if I should go Fuji or Sony fullframe but the 12-24 tips the balance in favor of Sony.
Despite not having the best specs of Sony’s latest wide-angle lenses, the FE 12-24mm f/4 G offers a serious ultra-wide field of view, whereas Sony’s new 16-35mm f/2.8 GM lens is a little less extreme, but still ultra-wide.
The FE 12-24mm f/4 G is comprised of 17 elements including four aspherical, one super and three extra-low dispersion elements, and one piece of Super ED glass. These all work together to minimize chromatic aberration, flare and ghosting, and seven aperture blades should deliver smooth bokeh in out-of-focus areas.
The new Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM, meanwhile, promises to deliver some of the best image quality we’ve seen from a wide-angle zoom. Sony claims its latest G-Master lens offers better sharpness and smoother bokeh across the frame than the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L USM III.
This is thanks to the 16-35mm f/2.8 GM’s 16-element construction, the highlights of which are its two extreme aspherical elements, which have been cut to high degree of surface precision that's uniform across the glass. What’s more, the lens includes an 11-bladed aperture that should produce luscious bokeh.
