Unfortunately his information is accurate. There is a new delay and the new expected availability is indeed December 1st.

I called Adorama and B&H yesterday. The X1D has been delayed again. New estimated availability date is DECEMBER 1. You have to wonder what the problem is with this camera that they can't get it released. This can't all be about the earthquake issues in Japan. Hasselblad must be encountering issues that they can't easily resolve. Seems like this is going to be a 2017 launch at this point.

I think its merely corporate culture. Fuji buys way more chips than Hassy, overall, and merely asked Sony to ask Hassy to be second to the Floor of Yodobashi camera.

Is it possible that they simply can't meet demand?

The camera is quite unique, and ambitious, nothing else is like it ATM(*). So, is it harder to get it working right, are lots of Leica style customers creating "unexpected" demand. OK, perhaps it takes a few extra months, nothing different than we got with Zeiss when their Batis and Loxia lenses also suffered from "unexpected" demand - but it was _really_ worth the wait

I like this camera, and I find myself no longer caring about the next Leica-M and if it might have an EVF for my aging eyes ...

At this point, I’ve been told that a decision has been made to reorganise the production facility to cope with much higher volumes than were initially anticipated (even so, the back order list is expected to extend into early next year). This reorganisation is currently in progress and means delivery of the first cameras is now expected late November. Just passing along what I know.

(*) New Fuji MF is not even close in concept. Nice, but same as Pentax, the cheap MF option for working pros.

What are your thoughts on the adapted H lenses versus using the 90mm (sorry as we have many unknowns as we don't have the adapter to test)?

I am planning on getting all 4 of these lenses. I expect that I will use the 100 f/2.2, and the 150 f/3.2 for portraits and the 90 f/3.2 primarily for not portrait work. I hope the 45 f/3.5 is at least decent for portraits, but I expect I use it mainly as a jack of all trades, master of none type of lens. I expect it to be quite useful for travel and landscapes and certain types of portraits (shots of more than one person), but I expect the 100 and 150 to be my main portrait lenses.

One thing to keep in mind with the MTFs is that the corners will only extend to 27.5mm on the X1D sensor, so the worst of the 100 and 150 MTFs will not hit the sensor. You will get a sweet spot effect (you will be using the highest performance part of the lens) with these lenses.

FYI, a good friend of mine, Pascal, of DearSusan, has seen a British shop renting out the X1D for 180£/d. His understanding was/is that this was/is for immediate use, not 3 months hence.

According to the MTFs, all four lenses are good choices but to me it's obvious that the new XCD lenses are optimized for this sensor and have substantial higher contrast and resolution even at center and mid-field areas.
On the other hand, I'm not sure how these MTFs are tested or if it's fair to compare them side by side.

(I have not tried them, but they did post an unboxing video; I can't remember whether it was of a final camera or an ex-demo version.)

Wish he'd shown how to use the cam without looking at the screen. How is exposure comp done without the screen?

I would assume that like most cameras, exposure compensation uses the dial that isn't used to control the aperture in aperture priority and the dial that isn't used to control shutter speed in shutter speed priority. In manual mode, you probably can't control exposure compensation with the dials which is fine with me as I can control either shutter speed or aperture (or ISO) to affect exposure.

Edit: I just finished watching Part 3 of Ming's description and the front dial controls aperture in aperture priority and manual mode and shutter speed in shutter speed priority mode, the back dial control exposure compensation in both aperture priority and shutter speed priority modes and shutter speed in manual mode.

I'd like to put a little input into this thread for those of you considering this camera. I went to the Photo Plus Expo in NYC last Saturday and had hands on with the following:

Hasselblad X1D regular and 4116 edition.
Hasseblad 30, 45, and 90mm lenses.
Zeiss for Otus/Loxia testing.
Leica SL.

I currently shoot with an A7, A6000, A77. With the release of the X1D I'm completely rethinking my gear lay out. I shoot primarily with my Batis 25mm and 85mm and absolutely adore them both. I don't think I will get rid of them even if I purchase this new system.

That said here is my personal take. I gave the SL a try and although blown away by the viewfinder I can not give in to a $13,000 price tag (SL + 50mm 1.4) just to have an amazing viewfinder experience. In the end you're left with the image you've shot and I want something more than 35mm and 24mp which I already have and am already very satisfied with--my A7, at 1/7th the price for the body alone.

So now I'm looking at the Hasselblad and originally before hands on from images alone the 90mm was my main interest. I still think I would like it but after trying all three lenses very briefly the field of view of the 45mm which is translated to ~35mm full frame was the one I actually liked best. The 30mm as well was a very nice wide angle view and I'd love to get some architecture/landscape shots in with that.

I do not know if it was mentioned but in talking with Hasselblad reps 5 new X1D specific lenses are coming out 2017. Based upon that information I'm leaning towards the 45mm as my first lens of choice in hopes that a 100mm 2.2-ish lens comes out in a native form.

In playing with the system for quite a while I noticed a few things, some pros and some cons:
*The feel in hand is absolutely amazing. I love the clean feel and design.
*The firmware clearly was not finalized with a few small glitches here and there.
*I really wish the screen tilted thus giving the ability to shoot looking down into the viewfinder style as I do on my A7.
*The viewfinder itself was on par with an A7 which is fine by me. Do I wish it was like the SL viewfinder? Yes. Am I offput to the point of not buying it? No. The finalized version will have the ability to change the contrast/brightness/etc from what I've read.
*The camera does get toasty as the heat radiates out from the chip into the solid body. This doesn't bother me but maybe it will bother you. Maybe it won't be like that in final production.

All in all I have been sold on mirrorless since day 1 when it was announced. I thought to myself "man it would be great if they did full frame one day!" and then once that came out "It would be AMAZING if medium format would be developed." Well it has and it is here and I'm ready for it.

I am personally waiting until new years to put my order in as I am not in a rush and I'd like to hear a little feedback from the first full production models but right now I am just trying to decide which body I want... black or silver!

A shot of me holding the X1D... high res via my friend Josh Cole who went with me.

Thanks for the report. I still have my order in and I have picked up some other HC lenses while I am waiting. I am very intrigued by the 5 new lenses that will be coming. The one I would most want is something like a 135 f/2.8 if it is substantially smaller than the HC 150 f/3.2. I see a four lens kit with the 30, 45, 90, and that 135 as a great all around kit, then I could supplement with HC lenses for special purposes--for landscape the HCD 24 f/4.8, for portraits the HC 100 f/2.2, for long telephoto the HC 300 f/4.5, and for macro the HC 120 f/4. With 5 new lenses, however, some of the those HC lenses might have XCD counterparts.

In a German forum someone reported a 3-4 seconds blackout after the image is taken. Can you confirm that?

Thanks for that. There are no demos in Oz yet as far as I know so I really enjoy user experiences like this.

The photo makes me want one. It sure does look small in the hand.

Here is what Ming Thein writes in his blog: "I certainly think it’s no slower or less responsive than say a Sony A7RII in use – the bits that are slow we can live with; responsiveness is good though I’m told will improve with an EFC mode"

As far as I would assume, Ming Thein would complain clearly if the camera would let him wait 3-4s after the shot, no pro would accept that - he also complained about certain slownesses with the a7r2, like 100% magnification. That sounds more like a firmware beta bug to me...

I don't know him well but I am always skeptical when people have as good access as Ming Thein to early production models and a very good relationship with a manufacturer. I would trust an independent forum member a lot more on this issue

Yes, that is true, he is a kinid of "Hasselblad ambassador" since a little while, and he wrote that clearly on his blog, I read quite some articles written by him and I like them quite a bit, he has a very disciplined attitude towards shooting, and at least his non- hasselblad reviews are quite free from brand considerations. For Hasselblad it is probably more difficult to tell, he has made also some kind of promotional video.

The easiest way to know is to try out oneself. Calumet (Berlin) have their "Herbstmesse" soon with all brands being present there, they generally want people to try out their stuff. I will look if I can handle one, although this year they will probably have much more people being interested in them because of X1D.

BTW, did you now permanently switch to a7II?
