Thanks Steve I'm going for the Zeiss
Keep in mind that it's very likely there will be a tele Loxia soon.
Meanwhile, I would go with the C/Y Sonnar 100/3.5. You can find mint copies for around $300.

Thanks Fred , I was thinking the Contax as well. What adapter are you using
I'm using the Kipon (Helicoid) but there is a cheaper Fotodiox (~$50) which should work fine.
With the adapter, this lens is only a bit taller than our Loxia 21. (seems higher though)
With a helicoid adapter you get great magnification. (macro)
My new 24-70 just came and my first tests show extreme field curvature in 35mm. Is this something that anyone has noticed? Only in f8 it seems to disappear. Should I go for another copy?
Can't say I have really noticed this on mine but then I haven't really looked for it. Interestingly this review http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews/sony_fe_24_70mm_f2_8_gm_review/sharpness_2/
Seems to say that the lens is not at it best at 35mm when it comes to the edges. Personally my copy is very sharp across the field apart from the 65-70mm end of the range where edge sharpness drop off even at f8. Anyway will try to do some tests at 35mm to see how field curvature is on mine
Thank you for your response. Actually at 70mm mine is fine. The problem is between 30-40mm and near infinity focus. If I focus on a 100-150 meter distance using center focus point both borders are soft at the same distance and only objects in 5-10 meters from the lens are in focus. This happens even stopped down and it's really annoying for the price. Probably I will try another copy.

Just wondering as more people have now probably received this lens if others are finding that at 65-70mm they are getting soft edges and corners even stopped down to f8 (centre is sharp at all apertures). Apart from this my copy is superb at all focal lengths and apertures. I get the feeling from other posts that this may just be the way it is so was wondering what other folks were now finding. Thanks

Did you test for centering at 70mm? I tested 2 copies of this lens and one was only decentered at the long range.
My tests show that a good copy is capable of sharp edges at f/8 at 70mm but definitely the lens is weaker at the long range.

and for the bad news. My 24-70GM fell on concrete and AF is malfunctioning. The lens also got noticeably decentered. I sent it for repair but I have a feeling it's a goner.

Thanks Fred. The lens appears to be well centred even at 70mm so I don't think that is the issue and for what I use it for mostly this isn't really a problem as long as I stop at around 65mm if I want sharpness across the frame for landscape work. I am loath to change it as it is so good otherwise
Anyway I am putting some RAW files in dropbox and will post the link so maybe you or others can take a look

I remember seeing some field curvature at some FLs. It could be what you are experiencing. Did you try focusing on the edges instead?
With the 24-70/2.8GM, there is no doubt that 50-55mm is better towards the edges when compared to 70mm.
Here is from my own crops: TOP (50mm) | BOTTOM (70mm). Both at f/8
As good as it is at 50mm, the Loxia 50/2 is notably better towards the edges at infinity. The 24-70/2.8GM strength is really from 24-40mm. Prime-like.

I found another sample at infinity with FL 70mm and f/8.
There is a big jump from f/5.6 to f/8 but no changes to f/11 towards the corners. So the sweet spot for the 24-70GM at 70mm is f/8 with my copy. See the center and extreme corners:
Not as good as 50-55mm but not bad at all.
