I'll be up in Yosemite (West Yosemite Village) at Christmas, and am close to making the purchase committment of a 24-70.

I hope you get a good one. I just shot another test series with mine. From 24 to 40mm, this thing is is brutally sharp all the way into the corners long before you reach f8. 50mm at f7.1 is still very good. From around 60mm things like less impressive, but focusing closer to the corners at around f8-f9 helps.
The performance from 24mm to 50mm makes the lens a winner, even though a part of me still lusts for that 35 ZM.
I can't decide whether this is a slightly neurotic operator and poor testing, a bad camera mount (which I suspect), or a lens problem (which I don't suspect). Ultimately, I will go with there being at least a little bit of neurosis on the part of the photographer as a given.
One thing to remember is that an eccentricity in the lens mount will be more apparent with a shorter focal length in most cases. I don't think I saw it in there, but if he is comparing his 70-200 to the 24-70 and thinking that the 70-200 performance proves that the camera is fine, he may have based this on a lack of understanding how the different focal length lenses will impact the visible results in photographs.

EDIT: There was discussion in the thread that the IBIS could be acting up, so this could be a source, and would act like a bad camera mount possibly, if one side were locked at one end of the range of motion. I would expect the camera to be able to tell that was happening, and would put out an error of some kind.

I can't get accurate decentering results with IBIS turned On. That may indeed be the culprit.
However, although not probable, it's not impossible that he is a very unlucky guy and got 7 decentered lenses!

ordered the lens and it's on the way.
Question:
This is my first lens that extends when zooming in and out..Would getting water on the lens while it is extended have any drastic consequences even though the lens is "dust and moisture" resistant?
I've shot with my 85mm GM, 50mm planar, in light rain and I've never had any problems...but I just thought about the extending of the zoom, I've never owned a 24-70mm before and this is giving me anxiety.

Hi all,
I want to know your more expert opinion testing lenses. I just bought a Sony 24-70 GM to be using it with my Sony A7 II. I did some infinite tests and looks like the lens is decentered, I get sharper results for the right side than the left side. We are talking in the corners... the effect starts to appear from 50mm to 70 mm. 35 mm and 24 mm are ok.
The methodology of my testing was going to a location next to Barcelona with high views of the city. Stable tripod and the camera using a cable release. There was not much wind and this results are more or less representative of what I found in other tests.
Here you have the worst case scenario at 70mm at f5.6 and f8.

Anyway... I'm going to return today the objective and buy a new one... let's see if I'm more lucky this time.

Try not to get it too wet and pack it in your bag with plenty of silica gel all the time to absorb any moisture.

So wait... How would one check for a decentred lens if the camera shop has no access to a point of infinity focus?
Will it show up say 2m away? 5m away?
My local shop has two copies.. My other dealer (non-prefered) is getting 10pcs next week. Neither is in a ideal location for infinity focus tests.

Last week I realized that most of my lenses were primes and only a couple had AF! I guess I'm taking IQ too seriously.
Sometimes zooms are very handy for me and switching lenses get a bit tiring...I usually carry around 25, 40, 65, 85 lenses.
I was looking at my previews FE 24-70GM images and decided to give it another chance. Most were landscapes but I really like how this lens renders wide open, especially considering it's a zoom.
On top of that, my only other zoom, the 100-400GM, was getting very lonely.

I hope you find a good copy at first try, Fred. It seems the GM is not popular around here, as most people scoff at its size, weight and prize, but if one is willing to put up with those downsides of a 24-70 2.8 zoom, then the GM is a great lens. Sometimes I do miss mine too, in particular when I'm not travelling alone. primes and all the changing lenses that comes with them, can be quite the hassle. I still have my 55 1.8 when I need AF, but sometimes a zoom might come in handy.

I got so lucky Chris. Grabbed one from the Buy and Sell board and it's centered at 24mm, 40mm and 70mm! I never saw a copy this good before. At 24mm wide open, it's sharper than my Lox 25 at center. This is just amazing as the Loxia 25 is sharper than any other 24/25MM prime lens I've tried to date. (Including the Lox 21)
