that sucks Fred, happened to me a couple of years ago, if it was paid with Visa there insurance might cover it.
Thats what I ended up doing when I dropped my camera and lens

and for the bad news. My 24-70GM fell on concrete and AF is malfunctioning. The lens also got noticeably decentered. I sent it for repair but I have a feeling it's a goner.
Fred, sorry to hear that. Was the accident in any way attributable to the size/weight/girth of the lens? I just ordered one and will be able to make my own assessment over the weekend.
Anyone seeing hard vignettes with this lens? I'm not much of a charts/tests guy, but this is pretty gross. Below is a quick example image of what I'm seeing; the vignette occurs for several stops at over half the usable length of the lens. I should mention that I'm totally in love with the 24-70 GM, just thinking that I need to exchange my copy:
1. Need to be shooting into the sun
2. Appears from f2.8 to f4 (disappears at f4.5 and above)
3. Appears shortly after 24mm and disappears by 50mm
Sorry to hear about that Fred. I dropped a Canon 16-35 F2.8 once (dropped on carpet from about 3 feet) and it cost me something like $400 to have it fixed.
BTW, Adorama just shipped my 24-70 GM (with the $200 gift certificate) I ordered two months ago. My Canon 24-70 L II will be on the B&S board soon.

I purchased one off the B&S board here a little while ago and just started using it last week. I'm loving it so far. It's expensive, heavy, and big. But I like it. My wife held my camera with that lens for a couple minutes the other day and said it felt like holding a little child

I tried to talk myself out of it, but after reading this entire thread over the weekend and seeing some great stuff, especially from you and Fred, I couldn't resist any longer!

We kind of left you guys no choice but to buy one but the lens is that good so it's a good call from us. Wait to you try 24mm it's mind blowing how good it is. Never seen a zoom at 24mm this good
Honestly this thread and the 85 GM in my mind are the best reviews tests and honest opinions you will find anywhere on these two lenses . And yea I'm patting both our backs on that one.

too lazy to read this whole thread but i skipped through a few pages and always saw positive things. I just got back from a 2 week trip to france/rome where i was constantly and annoyingly swapping lenses between mostly my 25mm batis, 55mm sony FE, and my 15mm voigtlander.
I joked with my wife about needing a single lens to just do it all, and she said go for it.
what are you all's opinions on replacing the batis 25/2 (which i love), 35/2.8, and 55/1.8 with the 24-70GM?
the GM weighs just about a half pound more than all 3 of the other lenses combined. and takes up just about the same amount of space in a bag (a little bit less, if you consider padding between lenses etc). Anyone have a picture of the 24-70GM next to the 70-200 f/4, or would be able to take one?
will the GM be as sharp or nearly as sharp at f/2.8 as these other lenses? i know with the batis and the 55mm i have a little bit of speed advantage.
i first switched to the sony system because i was trying to go smaller, but in the end, IQ and ease of use is still king.
FYI here's my before and proposed after lens lineup
15mm voigtlander
25mm batis
35mm FE 2.8
55mm FE 1.8
85mm batis

You honestly don't need anything between 24-50 with this zoom. At 50 it's great but need to stop down a touch more. I have 15,21,24-70, Loxia 50 . GM 85 1.4
Than I have a RXrI II but for different reasons and a ZM 85 F4 for travel
