I can resist the 24-70 as I prefer small primes in that range.
I can resist the 85mm GM as I really like my 85mm Batis.

....but if that d*mn 70-200 2.8 comes out and gets the same kind of reviews this 24-70 is getting, I'm not sure I'll be able to resist lighting up the B & S boards with some remaining Canon gear and putting in an order for one....

50 is very good as well but again I think I would prefer the Loxia 50 but I don't want anyone to get that comment wrong this is just me being very anal about this stuff and Fred seems the same way .

I also agree on the 70 as it really jumped big time from 2.8 to F4 in center and corners need to be stopped down. Even though it very good at these setting its the weaker focal length. For me I would be reaching for my GM 85 here anyway. Interesting the shot at 70mm at 4.5
...Show more

This is interesting.

GM24-70 and GM85?
But for almost exactly the same cost: B25/L50/GM85.
For just a little more, L21/L50/GM85.

Too many choices ...

The issue - at least for me - with primes is that to really get the full IQ advantage over a zoom it has to be an exact focal length. If you have a 21 and a 28 and need a 24, out of 42mpx you only get (21/24)^2*42 = 32mm or about 75% of the original resolution. And that's a pretty small focal length difference.

And the weight savings isn't that great in the bag, which is usually what kills me. The B25 and Loxia 50 is already 660g versus the new 24-70 zoom at 886.

Some advantages of a zoom

No feet zooming
Less lens changing
Less lens caps to lose
Same filter thread
No guessing what's on your camera
No extra lens to lend your shooting partner
You look damn cool
Women love big glass. Priceless
People know your serious
Some weight training
Total confusion on what bag to buy now
You have a kissing cousin in the next lens slot the GM 85
You get my initials on the lens. Better than Priceless. ROTFLMAO
Wait wait wait

You are now really a Grand Master

Great point!
That's why it makes sense to have the best of both worlds. Carrying a few of our mostly used FL primes along with a high IQ zoom could provide the highest IQ and resolution, especially when restricted to move with our feet.

1 at 24mm. Or do a Lee filter system but your going to need to go 100 system I believe it's called. I used that system on a Canon 17mm so it should probably work

Thanks Grant and Fred for all the work on this post. The wall shots, far field shots and bokeh shots are always great to see and it was a luxury to get them so soon after the lens started shipping.

On a high res camera the resolution loss by 'zoom with the crop tool' is not much of a problem unless you are doing giant prints, and not many zooms are as good as this one, most don't approach prime quality both for sharpness and distortion and are slower as well.

Its not the weight in the bag that I don't like, its the weight round the neck! When mooching about a town I often have camera plus 35mm round my neck most of the morning, and the difference between 300gms and 650 for the lens is significant. Thats the weight of a current 35/1.8 Nikkor (which I don't have yet) and the 35-70/2.8 zoom (which was sharper than the 35/2 AF Nikkor I had) I used to carry.

And these new-fangled fast 24-70s are even worse!

Gerry

On the weight size issue. Well this one is funny, in Sedona with my daughter and grandson. Grandpa decides he can hold a 1 1/2 year old in left arm and shoot right handed at the same time one handed. I do NOT recommend this type of behavior. One of them could drop.

AF certainly comes in handy sometimes

It's really sad that in Switzerland as in many other European countries
you would be taking an incredible risk in buying Sony cameras and lenses
including the GM series. Sony does not repair cameras or lenses and neither
do their nominated service partners, rather they swop them for refurbished
items which is in infringement of guarantee agreements and rights of ownership.
Generally their support services can only be described as truly lousy.
