On the weight size issue. Well this one is funny, in Sedona with my daughter and grandson. Grandpa decides he can hold a 1 1/2 year old in left arm and shoot right handed at the same time one handed. I do NOT recommend this type of behavior. One of them could drop.

AF certainly comes in handy sometimes

My Grandson is already too heavy at 6 yrs old for me to carry more than a few feet, and about the most frequent use of af is when photograhing him and his 4 yr old sister. They move too fast for mf!

6-years old is good weight lifting exercise for one hand. The other can then lift that 4-year old one plus the camera & lens combo.

I decided to run one more test. I can't sleep knowing I'm picking up the GM 85 in 4 hours and seriously how impressed I have been with the zoom. So given i tested all these lenses fairly recently I decided what would be best to represent them. I decided the corner at 5.6 since that is most likely where one would start with landscape , urban and commercial work. Now on center all these lenses will perform as we have seen those wall tests before and there all good wide open or a stop down. But honestly I spent a lot of money, returns and buying and selling to find my thrill at 35mm. So for me at least this is important. Be aware these zooms both Sigma and Sony are going against some of the best primes around.

The Loxia 21mm was shot the same time as the Sigma 24-35 zoom so it has the same framing at the 24mm setting or damn close

Here is the rub in all this . 95 percent of the folks looking at your images A could care less about your corners B never even notice them C who the hell posts 100 percent crops of images other than us crazy people.

So does it matter, To us yes to the world probably not so don't get to hung up on this and spend thousands to get a sharp corner. Maybe better said keep it in perspective to what you are doing. Myself Im more concerned about rendering and look of file than being about to read a sign a mile away in the corners. Back to bed

Im officially done on this lens. I swear I am.

Either lighting was a bit different, or the ability of Loxia's (21 and 50) to make a sun star is just amazing. That jumps out more than the corner sharpness.

All these tests are done at different times of the year. Don't go by color or anything like that. Yes the 21 has a nice star

The one that gets me is the zoom and the Loxia 50. Pretty stinking close. The Loxia 35 looks better than I thought too

Guy, you may want to think about opening a camera lens store (no bodies, just the lenses) in Scotsdale. Buy wholesale, test, test, and test again. Store moto: we test to the extreme.

Not a bad idea. Buy lenses test them than sell as premium guaranteed good copies. Even better offer it as service 200 dollars I'll test your purchased lenses before your return period runs out. Lol

Ha! You want all the benefits I see. I was thinking you get the lenses wholesale ( 40% off ??)' test to your hearts content, then rate the lenses A, B, Or C. We get 10% off of A lenses, 20% B lenses, and 30% off of C lenses. The only looser here is your dealer who will no longer be able to retire next year. Other than him it's a win win all around.

You jest, but as someone that is more interested in photography than gear I would pay a premium to be sure I'm getting a good copy of a lens without having to deal with a bunch of testing and returns. Lens sample variation drives me nuts and seems outrageous to me when we're talking about items costing in excess of $1000.

Big part the problem is what happens after the lens leaves the manufacturer.

Too much testing is also a hazard to the health..... of your lens . Somebody apparently dropped his/her brand new GM lens and cracked the front lens. Ouch! No indication on when it happened, whether during the test period or real life shooting. Anybody interested in buying that at a discount? Here is the link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sony-FE-24-70mm-F2-8-GM-G-Master-Zoom-Lens-SEL2470GM-a7-a7R-II-Brand-New-/331826175439?hash=item4d42619dcf:g:WTAAAOSwGYVXB8TM. I do not have any association with the seller; I just happened to find that auction page.

Their description says damaged in shipping.......

Mine arrived well packed from B&H, but the lens cap was jammed in-place, took two attempts and a really good hard pull to remove it. The lens was flawless, no marks, but image quality was off on the right side of the frame, and when compared to a friends obviously not up to standard. ~Chris

The description that it was damaged during shipping was new. When I received mine it was double boxed AND inside close cell foam padded case. That it was damaged during shipping showing a dented outer ring would be hard to believe but of course, it could not be ruled out. Hmm, it looks like the seller is also an FMer and he read my post here .

Had a friend in the early 1990's who was a long-term FedEx employee, he said, "I wouldn't like to think how the other couriers handle their packages after what I've witnessed and we're the premier courier."

What address do I send my new 24-70mm f/2.8 GM to for testing?

Spent only about an hour today testing the GM 24-70, EF 24-70 f/2.8L II, and Batis 25. Need to compare but after just doing lens correction in LR the GM and Canon are really hard to tell apart. Only shot them at 24, 35, and 70 at f/2.8, f/4, and f/5.6.

Couldn't do more since I have to work for a living to afford these. My company is funny that way. They want me to spend my time doing what they pay me for.

Mine came from B&H but there wasn't even airpads on all four sides. Luckily Sony did a nice job with their box, bubble wrap, and case. Sure wish B&H would provide better packing on a $2200 lens.

Really looking forward to your crops. Thanks for your time and good luck with work!

Just a update on my custom hood. Turns out you can do 1 standard 82mm filter ring , blank no glass here and you can add another slim ring without vignette at the 24mm setting. I bought a break trough slim UV filter on Amazon for less than 40 dollars. I actually left the glass in for now but I saw some flair testing for vignetting so I may take it out. So maybe buy the cheapest UV filters in standard and slim take the glass out and you get a new hood. Personally I hate these supplied hoods , their ineffective and butt ugly.

Actually looks quite nice now and I leave them on with no lens cap. It protects the front element pretty good now. Than when using a CPL I just remove the hood
