Below are long exposures with the lens cap on.
Sony A7RII firmware v1.0 vs v1.10
Sony A7R firmware v2.0
LENR was set to "off"
Steadyshot "off"
LR 6.1.1 default settings with sharpening set to "0".
Only exposure pushed 3EV.
Crops are at 1:1
Room temperature: 25-degree Celsius for all captures.
A7RII firmware v1.10 crop looks processed to me and I don't see any chroma noise or hot pixel improvement. (Actuality it's worse imo)
The same is true for 1EV, 2EV, 3EV or more.
Sony A7R looks the best with minimal hot pixel/chroma noise.
Perhaps this update only targets long exposure base ISO shots.
I am sad now ... I was hoping this actually fixes the problem so I can re-order the camera ... ugh.
Thanks the the test, Fred.
Also, do you mind trying a 6-min comparison at ISO100? That's the one that puzzled me when I tried it. And, I only pushed it a little to get that ugly noise (+1EV, +40 shadow).
I am wondering if there is variation in construction, with some hardware doohickey causing higher heat buildup. This is a fairly common occurrence that components that go into assembly may have good and bad batches, and some of these components are the culprit.
I carried out a similar test. I put the camera in manual with the lens cap on, turned off steadyshot and then took two exposures at 30s ISO 3200 then pushed 3EV in LR6 (Left: LENR ON | Right: LENR OFF). These are 100% crops
Your results are very similar to mine processed in Capture One with Noise Reduction set to 0. I'm not sure why Fred's look worse but we'll hopefully find out.
Honestly I can't explain your results. The aperture opening should not make a difference as we are not letting light in.
Let me confirm. Are you shooting at ISO 3200, LENR set to OFF, RAW mode and 30 seconds with pushed 3EV in LR?
If so, can you send me your RAW file?

yep, ISO 3200, 30 secs, RAW, LNER OFF, +3EV in lightroom. Ill send you the files. Whats the easiest way to do that? I dont use dropbox, are there any free sites I can upload to and give a link?
One question for those getting different results is:
What is your ambient temperature?
If the noise is due to temperature then if some of you are testing this out indoors in the UK with a ambient temperature of 18-20C you could potentially get a very different result than if your in the southern US with an ambient temperature of 25+.
How about the aperture? I did two tests at f/22 and my results are similar to those of Fred's. Yes, it is warm in the LA area right now, well, hot actually.

Its probably about 16C where im testing (indoors/UK/Night)
And I assume Fred is somewhere in CA, with LA at 28C and San Diego at 25C even if he's indoors with air conditioning there is a decent chance he's 5-10C warmer.
