Formally, would also like to point out the 17mm TS-E and 24mm TS-E II are very good indeed. Not sure if it is because my Metabones is a decent copy but the TS's are sharp edge to edge. Have not seem any light leak or adapter induced flare issues with the flocked Metabones IV. Handholding one with IBIS allows for lovely low shutter speeds.

One real PITA is the electronic level - so insensitive that it is near useless for accurately levelling a TS lens. You can roll/tilt the lens a great deal before it registers. Quite annoyed - worse than the 5DIII and that was only just acceptable.

I have the MB4 T with the latest firmware and would disagree with the statement that the 135L works well. Yes it is stabilized - but to say that it 'works well' is not my experience. The focus motor will move the lens and the stabilizer works and can agree with that. It works nothing like how the 35L, 50L, 85L, 8-15L, 24-70II, 70-200II, 35F2 and 40mm pancake work.

Interesting comments about adapting to EVF delay etc. I'm interested in fast moving 'wildlife' which is a bit similar: being able to use Canon tele lenses with fast and accurate AF would be a huge bonus, especially if the lighter and more affordable tele primes are working reliably. But it's difficult to weigh the pros and cons (EVF against OVF is one of them) and opinions about what works and what doesn't regarding adapted lenses seem to be all over the place ;-(.

Judging from comments by DPR editors, A7RII initial focus acquisition (and accuracy) compares favorably to most DSLRs, only the 'tracking' seems to be inferior in many conditions. I'm wondering if this initial focus advantage only applies to short focal length though, because I have seen many comments about (adapted) long Canon lenses requiring pre-focus for the AF to work well. For me fast initial focus is more important than tracking as most of my subjects move too erratic for tracking (keeping them in the viewfinder) anyway.

Not sure what version of the Metabones IV adapter software I am using, I'm assuming it is current (just purchased it last week but you can never be sure). [Edit: it is current at 0.41]

Put it on my 400 2.8 IS II. Worked well but when I put away the lens I heard it rattle (like something was loose). I assumed it was the image stabilization system but it never sounded like that, so I mounted it on my 6D, powered it up and then shut it down. Rattling sound went away.

Put it back on the A7R2 and Metabones. Rattling sound came back. Can't remember if I was exhaustive in testing, but turning off the body and then dismounting the lens does not 'dock/lock' the IS on the lens, letting it rattle around. Presuming that isn't so good for the lens.

Will try to see if there is a work around sometime (like switching IS off on the lens before dismounting) but just wanted people to look out for this kind of behaviour. It might happen on other IS systems that you may not notice until bad things have happened. Guess I should report this to Metabones. Also have a commlite adapter but it didn't seem as good as the Metabones, but I will try to get around to testing out my lens adapter combos when I have time.

Sigmonster (non DG) worked with the Metabones (slowly) but not the commlite (racked focus, never locked). 800mm, 42 megapixel and IBIS. Yum.

Has anyone tried a Contax G adapter on the a7rII? I'd be really interested to see if it has increased performance with those lenses.

I read that af contax g adapter is not working with A7R II and they are working on the firmware... I have no problem with G35mm planar, G45mm planar, and G90mm Sonnar on A7R so it should be similar. G28 still is not good with A7R II....

Update on the Contax g af adapter as I tried it myself. The contax g af ver III adapter does not work with phase detection af selected, but it works as usual with contrast detection af selected. That is why there is so many different info on these adapters eg they behave differently depending on the af method selection...

I don't have many Canon lenses left, but trying them with Metabones III, I had similar results. My best contrast af lens Canon 70-300 IS cheap EF version was not working good until I switched back to contrast detection. Then it worked on A7R II at similar speed like A7R which is not usable for anything moves. Tried older Tamron 90mm f2.8 macro which was similar, maybe a little better with phase detection but not usable unless it is mf.... Then tried 70-210 f3.5-4.5 usm lens which was good on the wider tele side and got worse at 210mm as reported with other lenses...

I sent this info to Metabones as they are working on an update.

Thank you for doing that! I am slowly saving up to go full frame so I'm trying to decide if the A7RII is worth it for the AF abilities or not. It seems like if I am shooting with native glass (for me) it might be worth it over the a7II...but so far the Canon lenses I am mainly interested (300mm f/4L, 400mm f/5.6L) as well as the Contax lenses aren't seeing an appreciable improvement. I won't be getting one for a few months so maybe the situation will change.

Fred,

Just a quick note to mention that I have tested the A7R II with the Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS + adapted with the latest Metabone Smart adapter IV and unfortunatly, autofocus is not always working properly.

On short distance (not focal) it simply cannot lock on focus. Ex. put the lens at 200mm focal and shoot something with about 10 to 15 feet and it cannot lock on. But aim at something around 20 feet + and it works. And when it does, it is at medium speed; not very fast. I tried it at 200mm and 400mm and in between focals and the same result seem to happend.

Is it only for my lens ? I don't know. But I am still shocked at the fact that, for a very recent lens, the Canon 200-400mm is not performing better than that and it is so limited. I have reported the problem to Metabone.

Please note that all my other lenses work as expected and are quick to autofocus and on the spot: 16-35mm f/4L IS, 11-24mm f/4L, 24-70mm f/4L IS and 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II

Cheers,

JD

A quick question:
Metabones are working on the adapter. So will they come up with a new adapter altogether, or will it be a firmware update to Mark IV?

Asking this to confirm if one should buy Mark IV, or not?

I just received my a7rii a few days ago, I do have the Commlite adapter to go with my Canon 35mm f1.4, 70-200mm f2.8. That said, the autofocusing is awesome with the 70-200mm f2.8. It's quick and accurate with sufficient lighting shooting wide open. On the other hand, the 35mm f1.4 autofocus is less than desirable. It's mainly a manually focusing lens. I also tried the Commlite with the 70-200mm f4, it too has an excellent autofocus capability. And for the 50mm f1.2, no luck whatsoever with autofocus...period!!! IMO, Commlite is a superior alternative to Metabones.

With the Metabones IV the 35L on my A7RII is super fast and reliable and the best out of all the lenses I have and as good as the 5DIII, lightning fast. I would guess it is the adapter. I just wish the 135L would work.

So odd. Took the 50mm 1.2 out for a spin this afternoon and it was amazing on the Metabones. Far better than my 5DIII.

Can there be that much variation in the adapters?

Posted this elsewhere, thought I'd put it here if it helps
People with 100-400 II might try this:

I have a 100-400 I:
With Metabones 3 did not work at all. Seemed a communications error
With Metabones 4 and .41 firmware worked fine at shorter focal lengths (<300?) but could not lock on at 400 as reported by others in this thread. THEN I moved the distance switch to 6.5m-infinity and it worked fine. Cannot select MF from camera (only AFS or AFC) but can from lens as well. IS and everything worked fine.

So today I was shooting with the 35L. I have been saying how excellent it works and then this afternoon, after each shot, it would go into manual focus only. I could unseat the lens and it would be good for one shot then to MF. The 24-70L II wasn't working near as well either so this evening after getting home from my hike I reloaded the .41 FW. That was it, now the 35L works fine again. But what a hassle if it should do this when I really need it.

What all this testing tells me is that it's clear that there's a LOT of potential for using EF AF lenses on the Sony A7rII (enough reports of some lenses focusing faster on the Sony than an 5D2/3!)-- but that the software driving the lens-adaptor-camera communication needs work.

Pretty exciting. But pretty experimental-- except for specific combinations-- at this point. I would predict that in 6-8 months we'll have some cool possibilities open to us.

I get off and on focus. Sometimes great and the worst conditions and sometimes not. I hope an update from Metabones, which is what I use works. I shot these by focussing on the brighter area and then taking the image or just leaving the lens set on infinity, once I knew what I was going to shoot.

Shot yesterday evening during my daily hike and the monsoons are doing their thing.

24-70L II

On image 2, see the lighter area along the horizon under the cloud with rainfall? I have noticed this a lot in digital, the transition has this lighter area. I have even tried burning in just that tiny area as to me, it isn't natural looking but it is hard to get rid of. The darker area to the left in the rainfall area is a cloud and not burn-in.
