On a recent trip i went shooting landing gannets on a cliff with a 500 f4 and a 6d. My keeper rate was pretty bad. And i have been shooting BIF for years. Next to me was a guy with an 1dx. I can tell you that i was pretty jealous. The center AF is ok, but the 1dx, and 7dII to some extent, are a whole different ballgame.
To reassure you a bit, if you are photographing birds in flight with long lenses... "keeper rates" are normally quite low. :-)
while trying out the three main adapters I notices that the metabones seems to handle the scene below best as far as the light is concerned...
but my metabones adapter crashes my camera about every ten shots..i was hoping the viltrox or fotodiox would be an answer for me..but with this light effect I am not sure about it..
this was taken with the canon 24-70 2.8 version 2 and the AF response was good with all three with AF-S mode.
I shot the 5DMKII for a girls' hockey league when the camera was just released and I can tell you, if the A7RII can approach it using EF glass, I'll bite on this iteration.
Just tried out the 50 f/1.8 stm and it worked pretty well, so I picked one up. Seems good so far, but I did miss a few shots trying it out on my friends dog - a few times it took a little too long to focus, particularly at close distances.
While in the store I also tried the tamron 24-70 2.8 vc and sigma 24 1.4 art. Both of those seemed to autofocus well.
Have one in my cabinet....never be a good alternative to any of my current Tele zooms waterden wrote:
I've not yet tried it but the well-regarded E-mount 55-210 oss might be an interesting lightweight choice for safaris. Of course, it will operate in crop mode but the image will still be 18mp on the a7rii with a 315mm equivalent long throw at f/6.3. There is no Sony equivalent to the EF 300/4 but the old Minolta AF 300/4 is said to be tack sharp - don't know yet how it will focus with the LA-EA4 but I have one on the way. Heavy though!

I have a Techart adapter Generation 3. Not working with 50stm and A7r II. Need to look for newer firmware

Today after work I tested AF finally on Sony A7RII with Canon 17-40L on Commlite adapter. I had my 3 year old run quickly toward me and shot about 7 or 8 series. All with the same result. The first 7/8 shots are in perfect af, as he gets closer to me AF is lost and never regained. I tried different directions, against sun, with sun, etc, same result

I just want to bring to everyone's attention re. Metabones adapter. I tried earlier to use the "M" version of the Sony E Mount to Canon EF mount Mark 4 with the Sony A7r2. Many of the lens that own can not even be recognized (using the latest 4.1 firmware). However, after trading in that version of Metabones adapter to the "T" version, every Canon lens that I own can be used and autofocus was usable in all of them, albeit slower than with native canon DSLRs. I have found among the "lens that are not working with Sony a7r2, in the opening post" the following lens that I own and just tested with this new adapter are working well, including autofocusing where applicable. They are:
100mm f 2.8 Macro, not IS, lens.
70-300 f/4 IS L lens in all focal lengths
70-200 f/2.8 IS version 1 lens
135 f/2 lens
All version 1 of 24, 45, 90 TS lenses
24-70 f/2.8 mark 1 lens
Samyang 14mm f/2.8 lens
Despite what the Metabone website's statement that there is only cosmetic difference between the M and T version of the adapter, I have found a huge functional difference.

San since 135L is listed as not working, I am very excited to hear what you wrote. You are using in in phase detection mode right? How is AF speed, being that 135L is one of the fastest focusing Canon lenses period. Canon 135L, especially used, is half the price of Sony's own 135 1.8

I think the AF is acceptable, but I really did not put it through its pace, such as using AF-C.
It definitely works well indoors with average lighting. As with using other lens among the ones that I tested, the focus can sometimes hit and miss with the Sony/ metabones adapter/ EF lens.

Its nice to all of the sudden have 135L stabilized...... it is one of those lenses that I wished had stabilizer..... but with Sony A7RII it suddenly does

Can you share exact and all menu settings you used to get AF with the 135 F2 on the A7Rii and Metabones iv.
My attempt was not good; though better than with my Sigma 35mm 1.4 ART which shut down the camera.
I'd like to try again following someone's successful recipe of settings.

Very interesting, hopefully a few others can confirm. If the 135L works, I guess my 2.8/200L should work as well with IBIS added (and maybe even the 4/300IS?).
The experience with Metabones IV and A7RII seems to vary strongly, but maybe that is because people don't know about the different hardware/firmware versions or didn't pay enough attention to this? Hopefully it isn't caused by some unknown variation in the products that are used or testing conditions. Metabones should issue more compatibility information quickly...
