Received the 200-500 yesterday, set the D500 to basic jpeg just to snap a few quick photos and see quickly as I was in a rush to leave. This is 3 of the half dozen photos I grabbed and ran. The last photo is nothing special, but subject is 83 yards out, very pleasing basic jpg.
D500, 500mm f5.6 on all.
If you can try the 1.4EIII TC, as I have not found any issues with focusing using the D500. I find the focus is quicker and locks on much faster with the D500 than my D810.

I tried it too, the EIII, seems same as the EII, which in my case is a better converter. It's ok, if the light is good.

The Nikon 200-500 is indeed a game changer for me why?
1. Finally after Sigma 50-500 and Tamron 150-600, for the first time a can harvest the power of my D800 which was not possible with either Sigma or Tamron and i mean at 400mm and above.
2. Do not have to fine tune the AF to fix back or front focus.
3. E lens true, but real Nikon lens and not a lens developed by third party company which means that they may not meet all Nikon specs.

I've been sidelined tha last couple of years due to health issues and got the spark again when I received an email about the D500. Unfortunately the D500 is a no go for me for a couple of reasons but Nikon finally answered my prayers with a high quality super tele at a reasonable price. I can't even think of lifting a 5 lb. lens up to my face right now but I'm definitely going to pick one of these up. I love birding and the bird images on the last couple of pages are great, y'all sold me on the lens.

I can't believe the quality of the images in this thread. It not only shows what a great lens this is, but also the talent of those that took the time to post.
I just broke down today and ordered one. Thanks guys for helping spend my money.

Which Sigma? I had been using the old Bigma non-OS, I found the usable range about 100-400 and that lens was just awkward when beyond 300mm. The images I have seen in this thread are a lot better even in its best range of 200-400mm.
