Thank you - it’s a beautiful part of the world for sure. I think you’re absolutely bang on with your assessment of the gear. The picture above with the eagle was on a day where I was out on a kayak and it was just bucketing down with rain. The gear survived but I felt lucky and decided an internal zoom would have been nice!
I may keep this combo for a long time (as an extra set maybe) because the idea of a z9 in a kayak scares me a bit. That aside, a z9 with an internal zoom 200-600 and a prime would be a dream for sure.

What an amazing display of biodiversity, optical flexibility, and your skill.
The 200-500 lens gets less love than it should. I have owned two copies and have used them around the world. Optically, the lens stands toe to toe with the more expensive 200-400 VR and performs like a 500 prime when used on a DX body like the D500.
The D500 + 200-500 continue to be the best bang per buck per pixel for a wildlife shooter.
My only gripe is with the build/construction. If Nikon were to redesign the lens with an internal zoom, update the focus motor, and update the coatings, I would gladly spend $3000 on a Z-mount version. Optically, the lens is more than good enough!

Yesterday, I did a lot of searching to find the 200-500 image thread. There were other 200-500 threads, related to problems, etc, but it was difficult finding the original image thread.
Urbanwild - Thanks to you too for keeping it alive.
I would love to see more of your images, especially in the rain. I like it.

Thank you so much bs kite! I don't have a huge amount of photos out in the rain....although I do love how they turn out when I do get out there. I just picked up a 500pf recently, so will be more inclined to take that out in worse wet conditions. Nonetheless, here are some more with the D500 + 200-500:

And do you know what species of whale(s) are in the images? I wonder if they are baleen whales and subsisting on a diet of 100% krill?
I don't know as much as I should about that ecosystem. We all know that the ocean's krill population had better remain healthy/abundant through all the stress the biosphere is under.
Looking forward to seeing more of your images soon... and with that 500PF too.

I love that Stellars Sea Lion shot towards the end w/ the nose breaching the black water.
I've spent quite a lot of time photographing Queen Charlotte Strait... the waters between Vancouver Island and the mainland are some of the most beautiful spaces I've had the pleasure to experience.

Thank you bs kite! Most of these are all Steller Sea Lions. The one playful grey-coloured one is a harbour seal though.
The whale shots are all humpback whales and orcas. We have those and gray whales as well as porpoises. Perhaps more!

Where is that if I may ask? I see you live in Victoria and I was staying at the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear sanctuary a couple years ago and that looks a lot like where they took us to see the humpbacks on the one day we weren't looking for Grizzlys.

You're correct - these were all taken out of Telegraph Cove area while in a small boat! The orcas were typically up and down the Johnstone Straight and the humpbacks were more N and NW of Hanson Island. Take 4 years ago now.
Exception - the contemplating sea lion was on a dock in Cowichan Bay.
