I received the 200-500 today. I bought it as an E- used from Adorama. What I received was a new lens in a slightly damaged box. The lens bag and hood were still sealed and if this lens had ever been mounted I sure can't tell. I'll take the $300 savings and the slightly damaged box.
As usual UPS showed up too late for me to do anything with it outdoors. I took a few test shots inside the house at 200mm and I am impressed with the VR and the sharpness of this lens wide open at f/5.6. I have no doubt it will do a fine job on birds, when I can do a few I'll post them.

I spent a day shooting shorebirds with the D500/200-500 combo. The lens's resolving power and the camera's sensor, it seems to me, are a perfect match!

There are really many excellent shots in this thread!
I am new to the D500/200-500mm combo, so hope my results will improve over time. Here is one shot in difficult, sharp sunlight and with a considerable crop. Notice the bird down in the grass, keeping the eggs warm
