Talking about reach, I keep both a 1.7x TCEII and a 1.4x TCEII in my bag for when I need the extra reach, which is on a lot of occasions. So I usually keep the 1.4 tc on the 200-500f/5.6 most of the time, and if light is excellent I switch to the 1.7x and shoot that combo at mostly f/11-f/13 a whole lot more keepers on a monopod or tripod for best results as focus becomes a bit tricky, but with good technique you could nail some excellent ones.

Here are a couple recent examples with a D750, photos taken in Neotropical Trinidad & Tobago. In the next couple of weeks, I hope to be able to share some results with the D500.

Regards,
SJ

Does anyone know (from personal experience) if this lens will fit in a ThinkTank Glass Taxi with a D800-size body attached?

Well, Stephen-Jay certainly has demonstrated that the 1.7 can/will work with more than acceptable results on the 200-500. ..actually, excellent results IMO. BTW, I also keep both the 1.4 and the 1.7 in my bag when I am shooting with the 300/4PF, as the results, again IMO are excellent. I have yet to receive my copy of the 500, so my work has been with the 810 and 750, with my results to date (with the 200-500) quite acceptable, but in my view not up to par with the 300/4PF.

Good morning all! Sitting on my balcony this morning I witnessed a little drama that I'd like to share with you.... I've posted images of the Chestnut Breasted Mannikin pair that built a nest in our bushes before. Recently we heard "tweeting" from the nest and knew there were several "hatchlings" inside. For the first time this morning, first one (then a second) fledging hopped out of the nest buried in the bushes to test their wings. The first image is of the first "fledgling" once he came into sight. Before I knew it, the young bird flew over our balcony wall (we're 5 stories up), and my wife almost teared up. The fledgling's sibling soon followed.... About twenty minutes later, the adults returned to the nest and started searching, apparently quite upset judging by their manner, tweeting loudly all the while. We were relieved to see the adult in the second photo return to the wall of our balcony, soon followed by one of the fledglings (third photo). We still haven't seen the second young one... and fear the worst.

Sorry for the long tale! FWIW, I took a few images with the D750 in group mode, and wasn't as pleased as those taken with single site AF (the moving branches must have been distracting). All three images are fairly tight crops of these small birds about 6-7 meters away. ISO was also quite high.

Cheers and good light,
David

PS - Hope to report on the second fledgling's return to the nest....

Thanks for the kind words Birdie, appreciate the feedback as well Ariel. My go-to combo was my 300mm f/4 AFS-D with and without teleconverters particularly on my previous D7200 which I recently sold to help cover half the cost of the D500, which I hope to have within a week or so. It's been about 6months now since I have been using the 200-500mm f5.6e, and I must say the quality I am getting with my copy is very sharp, that it's very close to my 300f4 except for the broken, but wide open it still rocks at 500mm.

I am looking forward to more bif and action shooting with the 1.4tc and D500 combo... Here are a couple others taken with nikkor 200-500f5.6e, I literally use this lens for reach purposes and on the FF body the 1.4tc is necessary unless you are big into cropping which I am not unless I have absolutely zero choice, which we all go thru every once in a while.

Good light & happy clicking!!

Condor I saw in the Portland, OR zoo last week. 200-500 is a very nice zoo lens.
