Hi Brian,
I was at Nellis for RedFlag 16-2. And they did have 2 squadrons of Eagles from Seymour-Johnson AFB, plus the "home" squadrons that are based there. Thanks so much for the comment.

Shot a little past sunrise on a misty morning with lots of suspended water vapor, which doesn't recommend itself for capturing much feather detail. And 24 m was a heroic subject distance. All things considered, it still looks okay.

Man, Red Flag is something else! It's unlike the usual airshow routine (in a better way). You could have constant - I mean CONSTANT - action for 90 minutes, then a little downtime, then you better get ready for the next wave. You could fill up 2x 64GB cards easily. Maybe I'll make a post on the other forum for this topic alone. So watch out for it.

I thought I'd post a few from last night's walk in the bush with the 200-500 on my D7100 (vs the D750 it's usually mounted on). About 30 minutes before sunrise I was walking along the edge of a poorly lit trail, requiring dropping the shutter speed down to 1/250 to 1/500 to keep ISO at or below the max of 3200 I'll accept on the DX body. The birds were about 25-40 meters away and these are heavy crops, processed in LR CC with some noise reduction, sharpening etc... I still think this is the best VR of any lens in my kit.
While not up to the standards of many on this forum, I considered these "keepers" for my purposes... how about y'all?
As for the bird.... I think it's a Rainbow Bee Eater, but I'll have to confirm that with a little more research (feel free to chime in if you know what it is....). On the third image, I focused on the far bird as its head and beak were in a better position, but not sure if I like the near field being out of focus.

I have next to no experience with focal lengths over 200mm, but have always had an interest in bird photography, so I recently picked up a 200-500mm to see if it is as easy as some of you guys make it look. Short answer… hell no! I'm learning that this is certainly an area where the amount of practice and patience exhibited by the photographer are directly reflected in the results produced.
Here are a few of the shots that I am semi-happy with so far, although I clearly have a lot to learn.

A couple of heavy crops with D4s at ISO 200 and ISO 2000.
Obviously a huge difference but for ISO 2000 and a heavy crop I think it is decent. The lens continues to impress me and it is just fun to use!

Probably will take A7r ii with 35/2.8, Leica WATE, 50/2 apo or something to take care of the landscape as that would be lighter and smaller than bringing D810 with 14-24mm.

Look out for a thread late June
If you are hiking then maybe the 300 but do note of course that in Bhutan, since all tours are organised, you will have horses to pack your gear, and the tents/kitchen equipment, in and out. So weight saving when camping/hiking is not so critical in Bhutan as it would be in many other countries.
I'll be taking 3 cameras + 15-30 and 200-500 etc.etc. but then I won't be camping and will have a 4x4 for the full 10 days there. I'll still have to meet airline luggage weight rules though !

Thanks, will definitely keep my eyes out for your review. I was told that they will carry 15kg for me plus whatever I can carry which I figure 5 kg would be about right and pretty much that's what I can take on the plane anyhow. I will have to wait until I gather everything and see how much weight I have left for the camera gears + lots of batteries as there won't be anywhere to charge them during the hike. If there is weight left over, I might take 200-500 and use it around camp site. However if D500, 300/4 + 1.4 teleconverter will give me enough reach most of the time, I might not bother with 200-500 though.
