I was just reading about that too I am really hoping for some 1DXII rumours once all this 5Ds crap settles down.
That said, 173 AF points sounds a little crazy

I found this interesting From DPreview:
It's convenient to think of the new 50MP as essentially an upscaled version of the 20MP sensor inside the EOS 7D Mark II - minus the 7D II's Dual-pixel AF. The pixel pitch of 4.14 microns is certainly very similar across both sensors. Accordingly, Canon tells us that at a pixel level, noise levels should be very similar to the EOS 7D Mark II and slightly better than what we'd expect from a 5D Mark II (note: not a 5D Mark III). Oddly though, maximum ISO sensitivity is capped at ISO 6400, which extends only up to 12,800. Even more oddly, a Canon representative openly described this limitation as ‘arbitrary'. This is strange because the EOS 7D Mark II (remember the pixel pitch of its sensor is almost the same) can confidently shoot at ISO sensitivity settings up to 51,200....Show more →
All these are indeed very odd. So they upscaled the sensor but crippled it here and there. How clever!

This camera will flop and will be one of canon's least successful dslr's
the lens is interesting. its massive, and expensive, but definitely interesting. would be cool to see some test and samples.

Jpegs look better than usual but that is probably mostly due to the better sharpening.
We'll see what the DR really is. At pixel level it's supposed to be 7d2 like, which should put it at a 12.5 or so on DXO I believe. (My math could be off).
It looks pretty good and price isn't too bad. I don't get the whining about lack of video features. I do get the whining about lack of DR improvement (we'll see when raws come out though, if it's 6d like at the pixel level it's honestly a good improvement)

I'll read on this more tomorrow, but so far my impression is:
Sensor: upscaled from 70D/7D II sensor but crippled (lower capped ISO, no DPAF, etc)
Body: similar to that of the 5D III but crippled (lower FPS which is reasonable considering the higher MP, reduced video capabilities, etc)
And on top of these, crop mode has no increased FPS.
Low-pass or no low-pass, it's a pass for me on these.

Unreal.
It took 4 years to respond to the D800 and it's basically worse in most ways other than for 14more MP!
The D810 stops over it every which way other than for 14MP!
They actually gave it less video specs than even the 5D2! Never mind the 5D3!
altough I essentially agree with you, if we were to nitpick, even 5d3 had a better AF than d800, and I am sure this is about 5ds also. but yes, epic fail. I am sure there is a niche market, say professional studio shooting that may have preference towards canon lenses, does not care about DR (studio lighting) or video, which would like this camera. looking at with nikon offers in the d810 and d750, its just baffling what canon is doing.
I think the crippling of video is really the last straw for this camera. Its one thing if you just cant compete in sensor DR department, but to intentionally cripple features on a camera compared to one from 3 years ago? really?
