How did all these complainers ever manage to make photos
5 or 10 or 20 years ago? Well, a lot of them didn't and couldn't
have. If the camera isn't a perfectly automated machine gun
they are stuck and unable to create.
There are a few exceptions in this thread who have legitimate
concerns, like Beni who manages 3 repro studios, which is
very specialized.
But most of the people in this thread who really know how to
make photographs, and have for some time, find the 5DS/R as
it is a really fine camera with wonderful capabilities. Not
perfect and maybe not enough of an upgrade to replace their
other recent fine gear, but undeniably a very good camera, per se, as such.
So many people complain that
* It only has 5 fps. It is not possible to make good photos
with less than 6.
* It only has 11 stops (not verified, may be more) DR. It
is not possible to make photos with less than 14 stops.
* It doesn't have Electronic First Curtain shutter on mirror
lockup (but might on live view which is a kind of MLU). It
is not possible to make good photos without EFC.
* The camera does not do all photography as well as the
best of all other cameras. It is not an all-in-one camera.
It can't be used to make good photos.
* This still camera, optimized for some situations like studio
work, does not have 4K video with cinematography
functions. It is therefore useless.
It is very rare that a photographer needs to get every single possible photo that can be made at a location
and with a single camera. A high end sports photographer
at an NFL game is an example of someone with that need.
But even then they may have one type of camera for tele
action shots and another type for closeup player reaction
sidelines shots.
The Dynamic Range issue is a key axis for angst (or smug
self-satisfaction for one who can't stop talking up his
non-Canon choice). We love cameras that have good
dynamic range and would like more. But almost all
situations where extra dynamic range is useful for
making snapshots are situations where the light is
garish and ugly.
If you show up at high noon to
make an interior photo with a window pouring in sunlight
the capable photographer has many choices available
beyond making an instant snap and pushing it in post.
They can add fill light with flash or reflectors or increase
the ambient light levels, they can plan ahead and choose
a better time of day or a time when weather has bright
overcast for soft light, they can use HDR, or other options.
Or, they can creatively use dark shadow compositionally
and keep it dark. Or fill the room with a little fine smoke
and use the sun to make beams.
We see the same angst in online games. The big cash
players pump up their characters until they are super
powerful and can smash almost everyone in the game.
But then they get upset because it can't do this or that
and give up the game and go dump cash into another
one hoping they can get bigger faster than their enemies.
At the same time, some players spend little or no cash
and enjoy the challenge of seeing what they can do with
brains and not cash. They play longer and get more
satisfaction out of their play.
People would get more satisfaction out of their hobby
(admit it now, for almost all people here this is a hobby)
if they simply accept what is offered or decline it if it
is not enough of an advance for them. But the gnashing
of teeth and the agonized screams that follow any
release are an indication that having the very best
gear is more important than actually making photos
for too many people here.

As a wildlife shooter I'm still scratching my head over the 1.3 and 1.6 crop modes on this new body. Who are the intended users of those two crop modes given that they offer no difference in capabilities over the non-crop mode?

Some people like it and can't wait to get their hands on it and are OK with the specs others like me are disappointed. All I can say Canon is not innovating like other camera manufactures. After 2 or 3 years you expect more. Doesn't mean the camera won't be able to take great pics or perform. I just think most of us are expecting Canon to put out some innovation and technology into their newest system. Some people take great pics with an iphone, or the original 5D. Which proves you don't need the latest and greatest to take great pics. It's more of a concern that if you are going to buy a 2015 camera it will have 2015 technology like some of the other manufactures are doing. End of rant...:-)

I admit ... I did not read the last 2 pages....
So I apologize if this was mentioned.
The sample image of the model in white .... am I the only one who is questioning the f8?
Her face is in focus but the earring on her right ear is out of focus.
and most of the top part of the dress (her left)is out of focus and nearly blown out.
Considering the cropping includes space around her face ... this feels more like f4.
My expectation would be able to see just about everything in focus.
FYI.... from the Japanese canon site, there is a new auto WB - Auto-W.
It is meant to help control the reds. interesting. produce more accurate colors.
Also some detail about S:N ration work but not detail numbers.

Just read about the new release, and agree to the criticism mentioned earlier. So glad that I decided last year to move on with the A7R!
Just happy that Canon finally at least tried something in regard to high MP. So now let's see what Sony has in its pockets regarding new high MP AND DR sensor...

If it had Wi-fi it would be the perfect studio camera. If it had DR on par with Exmor sensors or better it would have been the perfect landscape camera. If it had uncompressed hdmi throughput and 4k it would be the perfect video camera. If it had all of the above features it would be my perfect camera. Unfortunately we don't live in a perfect world and it does not meet my demands (only one of them), and that's not sufficient for me to shell out that amount of money. But, that's my opinion.
I hope Sony comes up with a better alternative for canon glass owners soon....Show more →

Welcome to the world of niche cameras..... Obviously, this one does not fit into yours..... and perhaps not mine, but I'm reserving judgement until it actually comes out. Maybe Canon will hear the uproar and enable faster frame rates in crop modes.... I'd bet the existing hardware supports this.... if they do that, they have my attention.

The worst part is June 15 availability. Canon must be really desperate. Obviously this is a white elephant with a short life.

You could be right. If that is the case, it's probably to head off defections to Sony's rumored 50MP sensor, which will probably be available for sale sooner. As for the price increase, Canon is living in 2011; apparently no one told them the yen has lost value against the USD.

My gut feel is that I will buy it but I will wait to see some tests.
The d810 does not work with my ts17. The a7r requires adapters and is just awkward. And I mostly shoot bracketed shots for dynamic range for landscape. I am just tired of that clunky, battery using, adapter using a7r.
Scott -- These are the exact reasons I avoided Sony (plus awful hand-held shooting, particularly with Canon lenses), and why beautiful as the Nikon D800 bodies perform, they can't use Canon lenses.

There is little doubt in my mind that Canon MARKETING wanted a 50mp camera, regardless of its other capabilities.
And you can't argue with the previous success that Canon marketing has had by introducing new bodies that have been "just good enough" to sell well. This may be the body which breaks that string of success, however.
Time will tell. We'll first need to see some reviews in the lab and in the field to see how it performs.

I have a question to pose - Why all the complaints about 5D's dynamic range?
YES - Sony/Nikon DR is better, that's a given.
But, currently an owner of D800 (and former A7), I rarely ran into that limitation with my 5D3 or 6D, and I rarely USE that ability with my D800.
Sometimes? Sure - I accidentally underexpose a shot by a ridiculous 5 stops and I'm thinking "hey, I wonder how good I can rescue this in Lightroom", more as a technical exercise than trying to actually make a good shot.
Realistically, though? If the new 5D cameras can reach the shadow raising ability of the 6D (does this affect DR ratings?), I think shooters will be fine with it.
I'm not trying to defend Canon's apparently lack of progress (or, slower-than-we'd-want progress) in the DR area, but I have to really wonder if "good enough" has won the day in DR.
More is better, sure, but at least with the 6D (and mostly with the 5D3, though some yuckiness could show up in extremes), the DR seemed to be good enough -- maybe I'm not as picky as I used to be?

If you had 'moved on' you wouldn't need to reaffirm your decision at every opportunity. Seems a little insecurity there. You want to go with the herd, but they just aren't following you. Too bad...

Some people aren't just bitching for the sake of bitching... I, for one, could benefit from a 50mp FF camera that only shoots at 5fps because that's all that's possible, but then accelerates to 10fps (or whatever) at 1.6 crop for better reach with small critters.... With such a body, I would carry one camera in many situations where I now carry two.
As I said in an earlier post... from an engineering perspective, it makes no sense that throwing away half the data does not result in a measurable increase in performance..... Perhaps Canon will do something about this before release...
