I've got a question... if the noise performance is about the same as a 7d2 at pixel level, when it's scaled down to 5d3 resolution, won't the noise be about the same?
So, I decided to tour around the web today to see what other non-wedding 'togs are saying. The findings are fairly consistent.
A great percentage think all three releases are overpriced. I agree.
It looks like a majority has no interest in the cameras (from a purchasing perspective) at all. It is consistent that most people are waiting to hear about the IV. Most being 90+% of those talking about it. I agree.
Most of those cite DR concerns and, really, just unanswered questions. I agree, but look forward to some real world trustworthy reviews. (emphasis on "trustworthy"... my only interest is what the sensor is doing... otherwise, I have no use for these cams)
A majority are interested in knowing why the lens is so much. The rest just think it's ridiculous, regardless. I agree. (but then again, I rarely shoot landscapes in that manner)
More than anything, everyone seems to think Canon has no selling points for the bodies outside the MP, and seem really curious why there's so little info released about the resulting images. I highly agree. That speaks volumes to me.
The only ones I've seen drooling over the releases are landscape shooters. Even they are all talking about picking them up used because of the pricing.
I haven't even seen much talk from the studio guys. My guess is they think their Blad's are cream of the crop; never to be outdone.
Which leads me to believe that maybe Canon's other goal of this was to attempt an entrance into the super shooter market. (Blad owners, etc.)
In my opinion, what Canon has released here is a beta-medium-format-competitor to test the waters in the landscape and studio markets. I'm sure they will win over some people, but I don't see this being a game changer.
That's just what I'm seeing. I'm beginning to think this will be a bomb for Canon.
Those who were really disappointed with the 5D3 when it was announced I believe are the ones this camera is geared towards. So if they are indeed releasing another 5D this year, it will likely (hopefully) address the shortcomings of the 5D3 and be aimed towards those who find the 5Ds lackluster.

I saw an 800 ISO 5DS nighttime landscape shot that Canon put out and, looking closely at the noise, it wasn't pretty.
After checking this thing out, I've been trying to think about the reasoning for this camera and price from Canon's perspective. I'm a lifelong Canon user and can think of 3 reasons that they've done what they have:
1. They are trying to differentiate themselves on price by going high.
2. They cant afford to match Nikon on price and are trying to differentiate on megapixels.
3. They are going ONLY for studio and landscape shooters.
if Canon is going for #3, I can almost understand it. There's nothing like that out there and those shooters need limited features. Any other reason seems ridiculous. With this camera, Canon seems to be intentionally going against what users seem to want. They're either too ignorant to realize that we want things like better DR and a tilting screen or too stubborn to do it. I think they're way too proud of their own sensors to ever go third party, even though their sensors clearly lag behind.
What's worse is the price. I've said many times that I think cameras should actually be more expensive. So my problem isn't the actual price. It's the price compared to the competition. What this price shows is that Canon is either very greedy (which I'm actually ok with) or that they just can't get their costs down, which would be a huge problem... Especially if we ever wanted to see them invest in third party sensors.
I think my post and Tony's sum it up nicely. I've shot Canon since '85. Sadly, regardless of whether it's cost or greed, if they don't up their game with the IV, I'm moving to Nikon. If Canon cannot build a sensor to rival Nikon/Sony, then I'll simply move to where the sensor is. The only thing that has kept me from that move is simply the glass. I love Canon glass, but what good is it if the sensor is stagnant slow moving technology? I'm obviously in no hurry, so I look forward to August. If I were actively shooting today, I'd have made the move at this time. My patience has worn thin with Canon, and I suspect a big portion of their clientele is starting to feel the same.

This would be an interesting question to pose to Canon marketing and their engineering dept. ... separately.
Where is Canon on understanding the customers desire vs what Canon can deliver vs economic condition (corp/economy)?
I know the Japanese culture come into play on how far one generation is same/different to the next generation.
As far as Tony's 3 possibilities .... it has been stated in different places by canon Reps that the 5DS/R is a 'niche' camera. First communication that comes to mind is the video from Canon Europe.
Canon current thinking is the studio/landscape segment has been ignored by Canon.
Basically since 1DsIII.
So the 5DS/R is to fill this void.

Things change. There was a time with Canon had the amazing sensor camera and the shitty flash system (quite the reverse now). Things will change again.

it wont make a difference with the sensor unless they go with a completely new one which has no precedence...
so you will have a camera with great features and a terrible sensor.
