I guess thats my point. The specs dont mention any new development of sensor. Why would we assume otherwise?

I wasnt aware of that. I thought Digic was the processor that makes the camera operate faster/smoother/etc. I didnt realize it had any effect on the sensor.
the DIG!C sensor is what actually converts the analog (our pictures) signal from the sensor to digital data. Called the AD converter.
There is a ton of data coming off the sensor, so topic like bandwidth, bit depth (12 or 14) are all covered inside these chips too..
The algorithms also handle noise reduction and other features.
These little bad boy chips and their supporting software/hardware are in the middle of your photographic creations.

These cameras were not targeted for wedding photographers, but not to say it's not a more than usable tool. If the rumors are correct the 5DIV will the more geared towards the wedding/sports/pj photographers. I"m guessing better high ISO, better DR, more FPS, better AF?, maybe better colors/skin tones/microcontrast, slightly better controls/options, EC in M using Auto ISO, WIFI.

All completely hypothetical at this point, but a welcome improvement.
And having said that, it has to at least match the 5D3 on things like ergonomics, AF, etc.
I believe that colour accuracy and ISO performance are mutually exclusive of each other because of the CFA. I don't think you can improve one without a degradation in the other unless there is a major breakthru in the sensor tech.
Just look at the Foveon sensor tech - most likely the best sensor tech for colour work - no interpolation of colour data - 1 pixel for each RGB data source but it sucks at high ISO because so much light is required to register each colour.
OK - maybe things have changed with their new Quattro version because I think they are starting to do interpolation of colour data now with 1:1:4 capture ratio vs. the 1:1:1 of the Merrill versions - the new version is supposed to have improved ISO performance vs. the older Merrill sensors.
I may pick one up for my portraits/fashion/landscape stuff. Probably will still stick to 5D3 as my workhorses. I do hope Canon will catch up on sensor tech. I just hate the idea of selling all my stuff and buying new stuff to get better detail in the shadows... But I don't deny that Nikon is currently leading the DSLR race in terms of features/options and at a great price point to boot.

allegedly the 5Ds and 5Ds R are just two of three bodies slated to come out this year. the 5DIV is supposed to be announced late summer/fall (according to CanonRumors)... The 5DIV is supposed to be the actual successor to the 5DIII. But...who knows.
So, now that it's official, I can only say, they better turn things around in August. Otherwise, I'm having a summer sale on what gear I have left. I'm tired of Canon taking the Apple minimalistic-incremental-update practice to heart. Actually, I should just call that fragmented-upgrade-offerings.

This is pretty much where I am as well. But I probably will have to wait until the next off season. Don't think I want to change up everything in the middle of the year.. or the alternative is maybe to pick up a 750 now and then sell everything if the fall offerings don't check a lot of boxes...
Looking at the specs I felt underwhelmed at first, but I also haven't ever shot a 7D2, nor have I read about it.
It sounds like there are a lot of AF and sensor/color quality additions going on here. It seems like a 5D3 with bigger chip on the surface, but me thinks there might be more than the eye can see.
Can't wait to see samples. I remember being blown away by the D800 when it was first announced. It's color and resolution were incredible. Excited to see Canon enter the big MP game, I hope its the best camera it's ever made.
I'll be interested to see what the 5D4 brings, too.
