p.6 #17 · 35mm G f/1.8 FX Image Thread | |
for hans98ko,
It may be that you've gotten rather a bad copy of the 35mm f/1.8 FX AFS, but I'm not so sure that all of us should infer a wide-spread common knowledge of, especially, the color character faults of all examples of this lens. It's fair, I think, to write that internet viewing of the often charming images in this thread will not accurately reflect sharpness characteristics, center or otherwise, one way or the other, but I see no glaring color issues in this thread. Certainly, if one is shooting solely jpegs, one is pretty much limited to Nikon's camera settings and therein may lay occasional issues with some copies of the 35, but if one is shooting Nikon NEFs, it is relatively easy to experiment in post-processing until one finds his(her) preferred color character, and, X rite Color Checker notwithstanding, I at least am not so sure that there is an objectively ideal color for any single image. At least that's my philosophy and, in fact, I calibrate all Lightroom imports (recognizing that not all, by any means, are Lightroom users) with Nikon's D2X Mode II character as my baseline before I start any serious PP work, and have done so through Nikons D80, 200, 300, 700 and my current 750 (as well as emulating that "look" with my travel Panasonic M43s.
After using a 35mm lens as my standard default lens (instead of a 50mm) for years with my pre-Nikon Leicas and my Nikon Ftn, I used the f/2 Nikkor AFD for a while and moved on to the 28 f/1.8 AFS, which is something of a gem for its cost, for an improved overall IQ, and now that there is the 35mm f/1.8 FX G available I'm going to sell the 28 and move back to my focal length comfort zone. I'm not a bokeh buff so I'll pass up the Nikkor and Sigma f/1.4s and save myself not only a few bucks (most with the Nikkor), but a ton of weight where a 2/3 stop--for me--has no significant benefit.
