I just received mine from Henry's about a week ago. Starting to play with it on my D750, and the first thing I noticed, this thing focuses fast. At least, much faster than my 50mm 1.4 (although I suspect that my beat-up 50mm has some mechanical issues).
No real-world experiments yet, but hopefully soon.
I really wanted this lens so I could have it for an upcoming trip, but seeing how it has been on order for a long time, I settled for the older 35 f2 D. I didn't think the 1.8G would arrive in time. I will eventually get this lens though.

If you have 28/1.8G, you can shoot in 1.2x crop mode that can give you 33.6mm FL, which is very very close to 35mm FL. On D810, 1.2 crop gives you 25MP in resolution. 28G has better optics and particularly has Nano coating, which can give you better IQ. So essentially you can set crop mode selector to either preview or function button and you can decide what crop mode or no crop mode to shoot on the fly. I used to own 45 PC-E so I am no stranger to 45mm FL. 28mm in DX (1.5x crop mode) gives me 42mm which is very nice FL for me too. 15MP in DX mode on D810 is more than enough for my use.

I've owned a 28G for two years. it is NOT better than the 35G, in fact the 35 is sharper wide open than the 28G. Besides, field curvature is almost non existent whereas the 28G suffers from FC.
As to Nano coating, see my previous image shot directly against the sun. I think Nano is a bit overrated sometimes

Just my two cents
Did you use your disliked 28 1.8g primarily in 1.2x or 1.5x crop mode? According to Nikon, NANO coating was developed chiefly to increase Micro contrast so that it can help to reduce flares. But we know better micro contrast means sharper images, which translates into better image quality. Perhaps precisely because of that, NANO coating is put on more expensive Nikkor? the curvature you mentioned is absolutely a non-issue when it's in crop mode, isn't it?
I owned three copies of 35/1.8G ED and shot about 5000 images with three of them last year. None is perfect according to my lowly taste. Issues, such as high amount of CA in high contrast scene when shooting at or near wide open, excessive amount of barrel distortion, and poor weather-sealing, forced me to sell them all last year.
