The cold truth is, if Canon releases a 1Dx2 and/or 5D4 with that 36MP Sony sensor, it would be touted as the greatest achievement in modern photography.

And on a similar note, if Canon doesn't release a sensor with the same DR of Sony's, I'm jumping ship.

Go join the rest of the DRDrones. Canon still makes me enough money without the 36MP Sony sensor. I don't need a mega sensor, just the beautiful high ISO files I get from my DX's

I bet it's got nothing to do with photography, unless they want to waste their money on NYT ads to reach an audience they can reach much easier elsewhere.

It makes me enough money too. So did the 5D2 with it's poor AF. But the truth is, I'm missing photos because of the poor DR, just like I missed photos with the AF on the 5D2.

Missing shots because the 5d2 couldn't focus, sure. "missing" shots because you don't have enough DR - sorry, but I have to call b*llsh!t. Did you "miss" DR shots in 2009, or did you just start missing them when someone else got a camera with wider DR?

Sure, go ahead and buy something else - but at least be honest with yourself about it

nah, just bored. As a yankees fan it's hard to watch national league games; pitchers batting doesn't make for "strategy" - just inning killers. Cards got first 2 men on and got zip.

Come now Tim, Rule 1.01 - "Baseball is a game between two teams of nine players...".

Make those pitchers hit!

Well heck, I was missing shots as a Canon shooter cause of low DR. I'd be surprised if anyone who wasn't strictly a studio photog/lighting guru wasn't. I bought a D800e after buying a 5D3 and missing handheld shots that with the Canon required a tripod to exposure bracket. So it's not BS at all. I get those handheld shots now with my Nikons and my Sony - it makes a very real difference. I still own the 5D3 but only because I have some lenses I use with it. I'm much happier with the sensors in my D800e and D810 and even my Sony a6000's sensor compares very favorably to the 5D3 at ISOs up to 800 (yep, it does). So maybe before calling BS you should try life on the Sony sensor side for a while :-)

Cheers!

Actually, I use my 5d3's for weddings and am absolutely certain no bride/client has ever said "that shot is garbage because there isn't enough shadow detail, so I'm not going to recommend you to my friends."

Tim, it's not about missing a shot with high DR...but making your life easier while trying to get the shot. Typically to capture a high DR image you would either use GND filters or merge multiple exposed images...both of which have issues with use and both of which are a pain in the ass to use and slow you down right at the moment when the sweet light is changing fast.

So it's not entirely about missing shots, but more to do with making photography fun again.

I think you need to be honest with yourself that if you shoot controlled lighting conditions and don't find yourself in challenging light conditions...then a high DR camera will mean squat to you...but don't ignore other photographers needs just because they are different than yours.

Canon is so out of touch with it's professional users that it's just sad. This is probably some teaser for a new rebel or consumer body...or some new video DSLR.

I doubt it's hinting at a 45mp CMOS sensor. No one has said that can't be done. In fact, hasselblad already has several CMOS digital backs.

So unless it's a 45mp sensor with a 1DX AF system, i'm not really seeing the 'impossible' part.

no one is telling canon that they can't make good cameras; they're simply asking them to get with the times and put a modern sensor into their bodies--kinda of like people wanting apple to make a normal-sized phone, and then apple declaring their new phones revolutionary..

I dunno; I hear the "out of touch" and "not a market leader" thrown at canon a lot - but at least they are honest about where they are going and doing. Nikon's track record:
"CCD image quality is much better than canon's CMOS"
"full frame is overrated; we only envision crop sensors as the future"
"Anything more than 12 megapixels is overkill"
"hey, here's a retro styled body with retro features no one wants"
"yeah the d600 was defective; buy a d610 at full price to replace it"
