I looked into implementing a text message alert for the mobile and it could work as you suggested. However it would be an expensive proposition as the site would have to pay for each SMS message sent.

I am not sure why that would cost anything since it's exactly like sending an email from Outlook or Gmail. If the site can send out emails for free, it should be no different.
And then I sent a PM to myself (note 160 character limit cuts off the URL at the end).
This would even work on dumbphones. Another suggestion would be to have the person just text [email protected] so that you can just take their SMS gateway instead of using a lookup table. When I text my email for reminders, the address to text back comes up:
Yes, it is true that several carriers do provide free SMS gateways that you can send to by email, but the problem is that this is not provided by all of them and it would require that your members know their SMS gateway email, which is probably rarely the case, while they would usually know their cellphone number. I think that there's a risk that adding something like this could end up just confusing people who don't know what it is.
I guess I am confused why you'd have to pay for that service. Regardless, it could be implemented but Fred is right that some members might get confused. Best to keep it simple. Those who want the messages on their phone can easily set up a filter or rule for their email to forward it to their phone if they want.

I checked into this. The reason you don't get the PM alert email notification is because the Watchlist PMs only show up on your inbox once you login in to the forum and the email would be redundant.
Once the SMS is implemented I will change the way the entire system works.

SMS (text notification) was also added for the Watchlist Keywords. Now Upload & Sell members can get alerts by PM and on their mobile phone.
Edit your profile and enable that feature.
