This thread also contains pictures of the 300mm 2.8 AF-D (with the screw to focus). Is it correct that pictures made with this lens appear to be less sharp than those made with the newer lenses?
I can buy a 300mm 2.8 AF-D for a very reasonable amount, but I have some doubts about it now.

Go for it, I'm a SOOC guy and quite happy with my screw-drive 300
You RAW dudes pics should look WAY better than my crap, no?!

👆Very nice! I love seeing great photos made with older equipment, I have never been a latest and greatest guy.
+1 5 out of my 7 lenses are manual focus... only my two zooms are AF (AF-S 80-200 f2.8 & 24-70 f2.8), my main camera that I take when shooting 'for me' is my FM2 with my 20 f2.8, 35 f1.4 & 50 f1.2... that is my ideal set up. I'm looking to swap out my 85mm f1.8 Ai-conversion for an 85mm f1.4 Ai and then I'm done. I guess if i get GAS, then I would have no choice but to look at adding AF lenses?

Will, I have to say that your BIF shots on this thread top those with your other lenses...amazing for SOOC.
Thank you, Ariel. I'm sure enjoying the old 2.8, by tweaking the 2 focus limiters (near/far) I'm having more
success on the 1st shot of a lil burst. Looking forward to Sandhills etc this Fall...I should have it figured out by then.

Will, when did you get the 300mm F2.8 again? Or did you always have it? Nice shots!
Picked it up about a month ago, Corey. Hemmed and hawed since selling my AF-S 300 f4...
and was content to wait 'til closer to Fall, but this beauty showed up at KEH and I had to leap.
Thanks a bunch, lovin' it with the BushHawk and expect to reel 'em in at Bosque come Nov.
obviously it's not going to stand up to the AF-S VR-II performance... but... you seem to be getting good BIF shots?
Mine's the AF and I have no trouble (with judicious use of the 2 focus limiters)
It's about the same speed as the AF-S 300 f4 that I mastered, but longed for
f2.8 again. It screws like a horny 'monkey...with a pro body.
