Took my D800 plus this lens with 2x out this morning. Bit of a troubling experience. I have not shot this lens since I have updated the firmware to the latest. Not sure if that is the problem, but now the AF is acting very weird. Stalling and when it misses focus, it chatters back and forth until it reaches min focus distance and stops... not responding. Tried a whole bunch of setting changes.... af-c single, 9 point, 21 point etc. Tracking change speed, battery out, uncoupled everything, tried again. I dunno. Does it with bare 300mm. Combo works fine with my D600. Maybe my D800 is dying. Anyways, looking for opinions. I can video what it is doing
Managed a few shots while I was trying to figure it out. Missed an eagle and a heron because it it's antics!

Sorry to hear about the missed shots, but I just wanted to say that pelican is freakin' awesome (although if it's RAW I'd try to bring down the whites a bit - a little clipped on the back of the bird. I only mention it because I think a shot that amazing is worth the extra post time)
Thanks Steve. Recovered the highlights a bit. Some blown out on the ridge of his wings, but I think it is a bit better. Was pissing around shooting at F5.6 checking for sharpness when I had the shutter and iso set for F8.
Still stumped with my camera though. Do you know if you can go back a notch for firmware Steve? Can't find any old firmwares on Nikon's website.
Tested out the combo again today. Back in Business. Dust on the AF sensor was the cause.
Got the Heron. Missed the eagle. Too far away, but was fun to see 2 eagles fighting and picking up a fish. Needed the 800mm with TC to even have a chance at that shot.

Excellent Nature series. Here is my humble contribution using the D600 + 24 year old AF version. Gray Catbird by ramkumar999, on Flickr

Just curious, I don't do racing, but why F11, and not F8, and double shutter speed to 1/250 to maintain same exposure?
As it was my first time, I took some advise to shoot at 1/125 to show "motion", ie blurred wheels and background.. Of course I had more oof shots than I would like. At 1/500 or faster, the shots were nice and sharp but lacked that sense of "motion".
