I just got notified from B&H that the lens I ordered on Jan 23. was shipped this morning. Not sure if it's a new batch or someone returned one.
I think it's a new shipment. I ordered on 1/20 and I got notified on 2/7 that it has shipped also.
Seeing the results it looks promising.Going to have a bit of a learning curve, since the most I've used is 400mm. I'll have to wait for the Nikon mount though.
Hi guys, I was reading on another thread about AI Servo and tracking problems on certain bodies - i.e. either not working or only with the central focus points.
I have preordered the lens for my 5D3. I wanted it for action and wildlife shots, but I'm not enthusiastic about using only the central points.

Wow. I'm impressed with the sharpness at 600. Much better than I expected. For $1000, a real bargain. Maybe I'll sell the 100-400 that's been gathering dust.
IQ looks fine, very good for the price, but it's not worth a damn if it only gets sharp shots for stationary subjects or on certain bodies and can't track. I just hope Tamron can iron out the issues.
The Tamron is an F6.3 lens at 600mm.
Why would anyone expect to use any focus point other than center focus point on an F6.3 lens?
You might get away with center focus point and the 4 assist points.
But expecting anything beyond center point to work seems pointless (off center, zone focus, all points, etc)

I tend to agree and I believe this could be one major reason we're seeing such widely varying results across bodies?

Great discussion point!
And in addition to that line of thought, it is known that if you do the taping the pins trick on the TC and the 100-400 or 400prime Canon lenses to get focusing at f/8 nominal aperture, the 7D doesn't work with the centre point. It only works in that taping scenario with the other 18 points. Maybe 7D users should try to use not the center point and see if that helps....sounds strange to try that as the center point should be the best point but it is a known quirk with the 7D from the taping of pin days.

This is true about the 7D, I had the same experience. However, from my limited tests it appears the 150-600 picks up AF a lot faster then my old 400 5.6L did with a 1.4TC with taped pins.
Who knows, as I am normally using it to shoot something this size of motorcycles or racecars, as opposed to birds, I'm not sure I'll have the issues that others are experiencing with AI Servo.

A recent phone discussion with an FM member who has a 7D makes me believe that you will have AI Servo AF disruption on your 7D. The same member has absolutely no issues with his 6D. Both bodies are also shot with a Canon 100-400 with NO issues.
Just hope for the cure before your season starts!

Thanks for the info! I also take a 70-300L to the tracks, which will help in some cases if I have issues. I could also take my 6D to use, although going back and forth between 8 FPS and 4.5 FPS might take some getting used to....
Did he happen to mention if this disruption was all focus points or only outer ones? Looking back I'm using center points for focus more times then not, which might be part of the reason I haven't noticed it much so far.
Tried my friends Tammy 150-600 on my 1Dx with a Kenko C-AF 1.4 tele and as soon as i mounted it on my 1Dx even without turning it on, i got the error message "cannot communicate with the lens try cleaning the contacts". I've seen and had this error message before, but never before even turning the camera on. I realize that "off" doesn't actually mean totally off, but once again never had this without even turning the switch to the on position. Thought this would be a good travel lens if it took a tele rather than lugging around my 600 or my 100-400 etc, but i guess not.

Did you know that Tamron explicitly recommends that you NOT use a TC with this lens?
Its native zoom ratio is 4X (same as the Canon) and even with a 1.4x TC on your 100-400mm Canon it still isn't as long as the Tamron (560mm vs. 600mm).
Understand all of the above, however, On some of the canon " not recommended or can not be used on this lens statements" I have used either a Canon or kenko converter. Sometimes they worked and sometime not. However I always check the interference fit between the tele and rear lens element first to make sure the reason isn't going to cause mechanical interaction between the two units. I also realize that there is a 40mm difference between the two lenses in question, however even if it didn't work properly in the "servo" mode, It would have been nice if you could get 840mm out of the tameron lens. I realize that it's still a good by for some, just not for me. I do have to say that I saw the results from this lens without a converter and the images I saw appeared razor sharp.
Real focusing problem worse than I imagined would happen. Posted somewhere else on an older thread
Just opened a new 70D body yesterday. It checked out pretty well w/the kit lens and my Sigma 18-250
With the Tamron 150-600 AI Servo focusing was completely inoperative. I checked all my switches and settings. I was outside in pretty good light, ducks in an icy pond. I set AI servo, first tried the zones, then single point. It seems that when setting anything other than center point, the autofocus doesn't move a hair. It's not just a case of speed or accuracy. The thing just is not budging. Maybe I glossed over all the issues I've been reading about because I didn't have them for the last two weeks using the 60D. One reason I bought the 70D is for more focusing points, zones, faster focusing etc.
I hope I can still send the lens back. While I don;t expect Tamron to invent a "fix" overnight, I'm kind of surprised that they have not sent out any statement yet; If they had, i would keep the lens and be patient. I have no confidence now and need to rely on this
