My thought is that it's a combination of many things: poor light, ISO 1000 (on a crop sensor), micro-motion-blur (1/focal length shutter speed is typically not fast enough for high density sensors), potential focus issues, and the optical characteristics of the lens itself.
In other words, the jury is still out!
Well the lens has VC, so I/FL should work very well, ISO 1000 even on a 7D is not too bad, and in some of the shots, the dog looked static such as the side profile. As I said the doberman is very low contrast and I know I've had plenty of trouble with my dog that is all black and have seen many shot like these where the AF just quite latch on.
This is not a criticism of big country's work at all, just my straight up observations. I assume the images are there to be analysed?
Currently, Emma the doberman is the closest thing i have to a bear/wildlife, maybe i'll go to the zoo tomorrow. If you've used or are use to using any of the canon L's, i don't think this lens is going to live up to the hype people have placed on it. I never expected it to, i purchased it so my wife could have a good range when we travel together. she isn't a fan of the 100-400 (does not like the push-pull), regardless of IQ. she loves the tamron 18-270 VC and was excited she was getting to use a new tamron that went to 600mm.
I have used the 100-400 in quite a bit of my travels and photography. I don't feel as though the tamron will replace it, i don't think the used prices of the 100-400 are going to plummet either. It's just a lesser expensive alternative that comes with some tradeoffs. The AF on this lens at times was underwhelming, at least for my expectations of what i need/want out of performance for a lens, regardless if I was photographing my dogs or the stationary light post across the street.
At 600mm the lens hunted and at times and would not lock AF, unless I stopped af and started again. AI servo performance wasn't anything to write home about either.
i was planning on taking this lens to india with me, but after today, i am not sure it's worth it with all of the other options i have.
i think people are wanting a free lunch with this lens, and it's simply not going to be that way. I am also not saying that people will not take and create wonderful images with this lens either, as I am sure there will be plenty. This is lens is a great value for photo enthusiast on a budget or for someone who wants a lot of focal length without investing a too much. It will also make a good travel/hiking lens for some, but it all boils down to what your expectations are.
If i were to rank it on the FM scale, i'd give it around an 8.5.
Again this weekend, I'll do my best to break out the 5d iii, 1dx and all of the lenses i have in comparable focal lengths.
Interested in seeing tracking AI Servo shots. I'm thinking about getting this for motorsports (I work on a team) and it would make a great lens for all the traveling I'll be doing this year with them.
We all know these are only a few preliminary shots. But I was concerned when checking for sharp details/hairs around the eyes and snout of areas that are obviously in the best focus, only to find them indistinct. I've seen enough samples from 70D to know it is capable of quite a bit more definition than seen in these shots.
The more examples, the better will be our pool of knowledge. And the more lenses used, better yet!
Looking forward to seeing more. Thanks for the posts so far.

I can't believe the opinions being formed over casually shot dog images. No offense to big country but I don't think these are any indication of IQ and sharpness. Heck I own a cheap Tamron 70-300 that is sweetly sharp. Are we really going to judge a new lens from such simple shots and on a non micro adjusted body for the lens? Would we accept that for a new canon lens?
I am not quick to judge by casual shots. Detail in fur and feathers takes technique and proper focus and DOF. At such close proximity we are very limited on any DOF. I still think the goods of this lens are soon to come!
I have seen very poor image quality posted with $15k worth of gear the same gear I see exquisite images come from. Best to not make judgement yet and keep an open mind😉

Karl, no one is making quick judgements, all we are doing is analysing what was put in front of us. No one has said, well that's it, it's rubbish and I won't buying it. Plenty of water to pass under the bridge before making that decision either way. As I see, the issues may be as much camera related as lens related. My 7D doesn't do so well with low contrast fur and I've seen plenty of shots like these even on my 300 f/2.8.

Right on. Tamron have priced that lens accessibly which is a great news for many hobby photographers on restrained budgets. Canon shooters have many "very high IQ/extremely high cost" long lens options already. What has been lacking are economy priced long lenses albeit with modestly good IQ.
Keep it coming guys. I'm liking this discussion so far but my initial opinions so far is I'll likely skip this lens However, I'm still open to change my mind.
Good news, I am heading to the zoo. We have kinda crappy weather and it snowed last night, but I am going to try to get some worthwhile non casual shots for everyone. Even if I have to walk backwards, two miles up a hill in the snow barefooted.
I won't be taking the 600 and probably not the 200-400. But I will take the 100-400 (two copies possibly), the tamron, 70-300l, 300 2.8 ii, 1dx and 5d iii. Everything will be shot wide open.

Sounds great! How about a couple of Extenders for the 300... ?
See if you can get a bear or something to stand real still so you can do comparison shots between the Tamron 150-600 and the Canon 100-400.
Funny you mention the zoo though, up here in Indy I have taken my 70-300L as well as my 400 DO to the zoo before, and was thinking this Tamron would be a great 1-lens solution for the zoo, especially when the family is along.
The other test I'm interested to see would be a 100-400L on a crop body vs. the Tamron 150-600 on a full-frame body.
Thanks for putting this new arrival through her paces. I count myself among the great, unwashed rabble who are too poor for big whites but sitting on the fence to see real world results from the Tammy...

gocolts, just for you, i will squeeze in a 70D and do that test for you. i am only testing one of the 100-400s though....
Thank you! You don't have to though if your pack is already loaded down...I checked and B & H just charged my credit card, so hopefully that means I made it in the first round of shipments.
My main comparison test will be between the Tamron and my 400 DO with a 1.4TC, both wide open and at f/8. However, as I went cheap on shipping the lens probably won't be here for a week....
